What is ImPACT testing?
Sheldon High School is currently implementing ImPACT, a computerized neuropsychological testing program for our student-athletes. This program can assist our team physicians/athletic trainers in treating and managing head injuries, such as concussion. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT can be used to help determine when it is safe for that athlete to return to play.
ImPACT baseline testing is available for any student-athlete upon request. Parental permission is required for baseline testing. Please contact the athletic trainer for the permission form. Baseline testing is not required for participation in athletic programs.
Essentially, the ImPACT test is a preseason physical of the brain. It tracks information such as attention span, working memory, reaction time, and non-verbal problem solving. The baseline test results are valid for two years. The baseline exam initially takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes to complete. Post-injury testing is often completed in a shorter time period.
If a concussion is suspected, the athlete may be asked to take a post-injury test. Test results can be useful in determining temporary academic accommodations and making return-to-learn decisions. Both the baseline (if available) and post-injury test data may be shared with your family doctor, neuropsychologist or concussion specialist to help evaluate the recovery process. The test data will enable these health professionals to determine when return-to-play is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete and can be interpreted either with or without baseline data. If an injury of this nature occurs to your child, you will be promptly contacted with all the details.
The Sheldon High School administration, coaching, and athletic training staffs are striving to keep your child’s health and safety at the forefront of the student athletic experience. If you have any further questions regarding this program please feel free to contact the athletic trainer, Laura Baker, at (541) 790-6652 or baker_l@4j.lane.edu.
