Draft Day

Have you ever wondered how there could be two basketball players with the same amount of talent, but one is better than the other?  My story takes place in San Francisco, California at the Warriors arena, the Chase Center, in the year 2025. Michael Curry is a first round pick in the draft.  He is one of the best 3 point shooters colleges have ever seen. Beyond the world of basketball, he is known as a competitive person but also very genuine. He is great at basketball, from North Carolina State University; he was also valedictorian of his class.  At 6’3’’ he is not the biggest basketball player. During his college career he averaged 40 points, 15 assists and 5 rebounds per game. Shorter than other point guards in the league, he does not match up with the bigger point guards very well. Curry wants to show his attributes and potential to everyone with his prolific 3 point shooting, which colleges have just not seen before.

James Durrant is on an Eastern Conference team, the Boston Celtics.  He was one of the strongest people in college, towering over everyone on his team at 7’3, 295 lb.  He is a great rebounder, rim protector, shot blocker and has a fantastic mid-range shot. While in college, he averaged  35 points, 12 assists and 20 rebounds per game. Outside of basketball he is known as a kind person to everyone with a good sense of humor, someone who anybody would want on their team.  He wants to prove why he was chosen for a #1 pick in the draft. The NBA has been in need of a center with his size for the longest time, and he is the right person for the Boston Celtics.

Curry’s coach, Jordan Jackson, is known as one of the best coaches in the NBA.  He has a gift for turning stars into all time greats. If there is one downside, it is that he is always competitive to be the best in the NBA.  He can get very angry at his players if they do not follow and listen to what he is saying, not too often but occasionally. Coach Jackson knows he has a dynasty team and the main goal is to win rings and have fun coaching a talented basketball team, with some of the most elite players in the league.  Curry and Durrant are both putting in work every day to be ready to play to the best of their abilities for their respective teams. In a bad turn of events, two of the Warriors starters go down with season ending injuries. One breaks his leg and one tears his ACL; both people were vital to the success the Warriors have had all season.  At this point, Curry contemplates what his choice is going to be. He decides to join James Durrant on the Boston Celtics by a controversial trade. This duo is now one of the best offenses the league has ever seen.  They sweep the Washington Wizards, Miami Heat and the Atlanta Hawks.  In the final game, with 15 seconds left, Lebron James of the Houston Rockets  runs down the court to tie the game with a lay up. He does not see Durrant racing down the court until it is to late.  Durrant blocks the layup from behind, and passes it to Curry for a three pointer. He gets it off just before the Rockets defender could block it.  Curry hits the buzzer beater three to win the game 121-118. They go to five games to beat the Houston Rockets to win a championship. Curry wins finals MVP and rookie of the year.  Durrant wins MVP for the regular season.

I am writing this piece so whoever reads this knows what talent truly is and what success looks like when it comes to playing and coaching basketball the right way.  These are going to be the best two players in the league for years to come. The main objective is to keep up success and win rings. Basketball is a team effort and one player can not hope to win alone.
