The Run

It was about 11 o’clock when I got the text from the group chat. I was just hitting the button to end my Fifa game. When my phone lit up on the desk with the green message notification. When I was reaching my arm out to grab it, it buzzed a second and third time. I picked it up and it slid open because of my thumbprint. “Who down to sneak out tonight,” the first text said. I’m with it, and yup were the two following. I sat there in front of the T.V debating whether  I should go or not. I had only snuck out once before that night. I texted the group chat “ya I am down, time?. It took about ten minutes then my phone buzzed again it read “11:45 meet at the tree”. I had time so I played another game of Fifa. I beat the guy 2-3, and the game lasted till 11:25. I then went upstairs to get my jacket and skateboard. I walked down each step like my life depended on it, trying not to make a peep. When I hit the last step it made a creek noise and I stopped dead cold, listening to see if anyone made a noise down stairs. I then maneuvered my way into the living room the hardest room to get through. To get through, I needed to pass my sister’s room, the dinner table, and unlock the door without making a noise that would wake my sister. I took my shoes off and tiptoed to the door then put my hand on the lock and twisted to the right slowly. I opened the door slowly, still trying not to wake a soul. I closed the door, but made sure I didn’t lock it and made sure to remember what lights were on when I left. I walked for about half a block until I got to the cross street of Andrew’s and my house. I stepped on my skateboard the luminescence of the street lights hitting the street. I started pushing, feeling the wind in my hair shooting down empty streets. I got off my board holding it and walking the rest of the block not wanting to wake up his mom. I texted him “outside” and I waited for a response but he didn’t text back. I then saw a blur shoot over the back fence. We were both wearing all black I walked up holding my board.

“Was good bro.”- I said

“Was good cuz.”- he replied

We hopped on our board racing through the streets up down Hilyard towards the tree. As we passed Dairy Mart I realized it was 11:40

“Yo, we gotta pick up the pace!”- I called over to Andrew

Pushing our boards the rest of the way there. When we finally got there, the tree was vacant. Walking over to the tree, we heard a rustle in the bushes then Douglas and Scott jumped out. Leaving Andrew so scared he threw his board in the direction of Douglas.

“Aight boys which house we hitting first?” Scott said

“Nah, real question who hitting it?” Douglas replied

“Not it” they all said in harmony

“Damn it screw you guys!”- I replied

We hopped on our boards checking every house for the perfect features: no front windows, and a direct path from the door to the street with zero obstacles in between. We saw the house, it had a path from the sidewalk right to the porch and zero windows facing the street.

“This one, go hide”,I called

They all scampered into a bush with all the boards and out of my sight of vision. I ran up to the door found the doorbell, slid my finger over the cold button and pressed. I shot right when I heard the noise, I got about ten feet before the door opened behind me and the light coming from the door cast my shadow in front of me as each foot smacked against the asphalt. I took a left away from the bush not trying to get my friends in a chase too. I peered over my shoulder to see a tall, old guy chasing me in slippers. I turned right into the ally and hid behind a tree. My heart beating out of my chest my hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t make a noise. Then he ran right past the tree to the next block. When I was running back to the bush I saw Andrew, Scott, and Douglas hauling ass towards me through the park

“RUN!”-Douglas screamed

I turned and spirited not knowing what from, and I crossed the bridge in Tugman looked to my right and we all saw him. A dark figure running at us between the tree line and the fence.

He was only visible for a second then I wasn’t looking forward then boom. My hands were all bloody my jeans ripped.

“Yo you good?”-Andrew said

As they all stopped to help me. Getting up I wiped off my jeans of the dirt and spreading the blood over them.

“Yo good sesh boys let’s go home”- Scott said trying to catch his breath.

“Aight, hop on tomorrow morning?”- Douglas replied

“Yup” -We all said

Andrew handed me my board and we started heading home. When we got to Andrews he slid his board over the fence and hopped it. I got back on my board using the down hill to my advantage I took the left back to my street and got about halfway down till I got off my board. Finally, when I got home all the lights were still off, I opened the door and locked it behind me. I tiptoed upstairs cleaned up my hands, and went to bed.

Coast

The stars are so bright

The waves crash against the dark rocks

The shadows engulf the coast

The fish gliding by

The whispers from people lost in the wind

The sand hissing in the wind

The moon shining through the shadows

And me looking out my window

Night

So cold in the night

I cannot see left or right

Lost in the darkness

Nowhere to go but stay still

Until I hear the voice call

The Crash

I opened my eyes and realized I was in a hospital bed with an IV in my arm, with the worst headache of my life. On the wall to my right was a poster of a baby getting its temperature taken with an ear thermometer. To my left, a poster of a boy with a light green cast on his left arm.

“Mommy,” Katie cried.

My blonde hair, blue eyed two-year old daughter stumbled throughout the gated restrictions of our living room, trying to get her mom’s attention. She was in the other room with me, packing for our trip to Hawaii.

“Did you remember to pack the camera?” I asked Jenifer.

“Of course I did. You don’t think I would miss the chance to capture the first moment of our kid’s first time to Hawaii, Jake,” she replied.

“Clay! Are you done packing?!” I called up the stairs to my son’s room.

I waited for a reply but could  hear the video games blasting from the t.v.in his room from down stairs, so I yelled again. After no response, I shot up the stairs, my feet hitting each step like a sledgehammer on concrete. I reached the top of the stairs and opened his door. He was sitting on his bed, his blonde hair ruffled underneath the headset we bought him for Christmas last year. I tapped him on the shoulder, and he jumped in surprise, taking off the headset.

“Are you done packing?”I asked.

“Yes, Dad, I’m done packing. I don’t even see why I need to go I’m thirteen I can stay home alone, or stay at Jacobs. And I’ve already been to Hawaii.” he replied.

“This is non negotiable we are going on a family vacation and you are a member of this family!” I replied raising my voice.

I checked his bag to see if he had everything he needed, not believing my 13 year-old son would  remember everything. I went through his bag and of course he forgot to pack underwear.

“Pack some underwear we are leaving in thirty minutes, ” I said as I was walked out slamming the door.

When I got back downstairs, the bags were by the door just waiting for me to take them to the car, and Jen was in the living room with Katie. I grabbed two out of the five bags and brought them to the car. I grabbed the other three bags and brought them out after. When I got back, I sat on the LazyBoy in the living room and picked up Katie, who was trying to climb up the side like a monkey. Jen and I talked about the plans for when we arrived in Hawaii. We decided to just relax at the hotel and get Katie’s first picture at the beach. By the time we were done, it was time to get in the car, so I yelled up to Clay to grab his bag and come down. He did so, and we walked out to the car where Jen was putting Katie in her booster seat.

It was a thirty minute car ride to the airport. We dropped the car off at long term pay parking and went inside. I was carrying Katie, who had fallen asleep in the car. We had to wake her before going through security. We let Clay pick a candy and drink for the flight. He picked a blue Gatorade and a box of Hot Tamales. We got an apple juice and a lollipop for Katie. We waited in the terminal for about forty-five minutes, Clay watching something on his phone, Jen reading a book, and Katie and I watching the people walk by like fish swimming throughout the open ocean. When we finally were able to board, we walked down the aisles. Clay and I were  sitting in one section, and Jen and Katie in the two other seats on the other side of the plane. Clay insisted on taking the window seat, and I wasn’t too sure because I get nauseous on flights, but I decided I can power through it that one time.

“The trip today from Los Angeles to Hawaii will be around  five hours. Please fasten your seatbelts. We’ll be departing shortly,” the captain said over the intercom.

We started moving a couple minutes later I could feel the front pick up and the back was about to pick up. When I looked out the window to my left, I saw an Alaskan Airlines coming right at our plane. It was like slow motion. I looked over at Clay, who didn’t have his seat belt on yet. Right when I went to reach my arm out, a hole open up and sucked Clay out of the plane.
