Usually on Mondays, we’ll send home a yellow homework folder. Please send it back by Friday with the finished homework inside. The homework should not take more than ten minutes per day. If it takes longer than that, please send us a note so we know. We want you to have fun as a family and not be overloaded with homework!
Listening to your child read and reading to your child for at least twenty minutes per day is very important all year. Please do this reading when your child is rested and fed. If a child misses more than five words on a page, the book is too hard. The website Type and Spell (see link on home page) connects to words that we are currently working on in the Houghton Mifflin curriculum. You’ll need to help your child figure out how to use the website but it won’t take long.
This blog has many links to wonderful websites which can help your child learn. We are not sending math homework because IXL math is excellent and Edison buys a subscription for every child. You will be able to track your child’s progress and your child can win awards! If you’ve lost your child’s password, email me and I’ll send it again. Place Value is one of the most helpful sections your child can master. There are other wonderful websites for math on our home page including starfall.com which is great for phonics and beginning reading too!
Every week or so, we send home your child’s unfinished work. Doing this at home and sending it back to us will help your child learn to get work done at school and make good use of time.
There are many wonderful activities you can do with your child for fun and enrichment. Play board and card games, weigh fruit at the grocery store, look at the clock and talk about what time it is, cook and do chores together, look at a map and talk about geography, sing together, play instruments, create art, hike, camp, and play at the park. Your family life is important!
