The mountain is a large Mass of rocks and dirt that rises above the surrounds area. Mountains are usually formed by tectonic plates or volcanism. They are slowly corroded over time by rivers and weather conditions. Since mountains are very high in elevation this leads to colder temperatures. This leads to different plant and animal life then the surrounding land.
The top of the mountain is where they keep the first fire and where they first see “the Beast.” If the mountain wasn’t part of the island the boys may have never mistaken the pilot for a beast because on the mountain the winds are higher and this leads to the parachute seeming more lifelike.
