Elie's Travel Brochure

This city is Elie’s hometown. Its original name is Sighetu Marmației. It is a town in Transylvania and has approximately 41000 inhabitants. In World War 1 the town was part of Romania, but then between 1940 and 1944 it was part of Hungary.

A ghetto was established in Sighet on April 18-20, 1944, after the German occupation of Hungary. Approximately 14,000 Jews from Sighet and surrounding villages were crowded into the ghetto. The entire Jewish population was deported to Auschwitz from May 17-21, 1944.

In Sighet, you can visit the Memorial of The Victims of Communism and of The Resistance; and The Elie Wiesel Memorial House.
