Week of January 16

January 15th, 2017

MLK-Charcter

Hello Shining Stars,

This week we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King and our country’s path towards a more perfect union and his goal to end racial discrimination in the United States.  I am especially impressed with the lessons I have observed in the social justice club and the 3rd grade classroom.  It is so encouraging to see students school wide attempting to make their school a place that recognizes the need for diversity, justice, and positive learning spaces. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves to enjoy the same economic, political and social rights, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender or other characteristics. Teaching social justice in the classroom is crucial for preparing young people to become responsible global citizens in the 21st century.  I commend you as a staff for living this dream and teaching it for all of our students.

Some important announcements for the week:

• Investigations Workbook Purge – Downtown is collecting any and all unused/unwanted Investigations workbooks. There are some workbooks in storage that I am planning to send downtown on Thursday if I don’t hear from any teachers before then saying you want them before then. Teachers should also let me know if you have any unused/unwanted workbooks in your classroom that I can collect before Thursday as well.

• School Showcase & School Choice Info – School Choice season has begun and the School Showcase (see Kerry Delf’s email for details) will be held this Saturday at the Ed Center, 9:00-12:00 if any staff members are interested/willing to help to talk about our school. This event is for families to learn about all 4J schools in one place at the same time. Last year they provided breakfast for staff helping at the event, including a vegetarian option. Let me know if any of you are interested/willing to help promote El Camino del Rio and tell families why they should come to our school!

Another related items: One, the first School Choice Visitation Week is next week, January 23-27, so be prepared for families to visit classrooms over the course of the week. There will also be one evening event at our school in February.

• Oregon Battle of the Books Regional Competition, March 18th – If you’d like to root on El Camino del Rio’s OBOB team, the Elementary OBOB Regionals will be Saturday, March 18th at North Eugene High School. More details to come soon.

•Reminder about PLC Time:  With the short month of November and the bumpy month of December many of us have gotten out of sync a bit on Wednesdays.  Please remember that PLC Time runs from 1:45 (or the end of dismissal duty) to 2:45. Then, at 2:45, teachers have their scheduled protected 1 hour of individual prep time.  Please show up to your PLC time on time to work on formative assessment, planning, and instruction.  I have noticed that some have chosen to go back to classrooms to plan. This is OK if you are following the PLC expectations.  Please support your team and do the important work to improve formative assessments in these groups.  That is the main focus of this time.

Teaching and Learning Emerging Bilinguals:

It is resolution season! Of course, we all know that resolutions are hard to keep and can often be unrealistic. Teachers are always looking for ways to improve in the classroom; to assist with any of your New Year’s resolutions that relate to instruction, Kristina recommends five specific and measurable actions you can implement to assist ELLs in the classroom – but suggests that you pick just one to try! Take a look at her article to learn a good ELL technique.

Here is the First Lady of the United States describing the assets of immigrants and bilinguals in our society today. She makes some great points in this minute clip.
