Week of January 9

January 8th, 2017

Hello Shining Stars,

I hope you’ve all stayed safe during the snowy and icy weather. It was nice to see all of the teachers and kids again on Friday in the shortest school week ever.  I hope to get to a state of normalcy next week.

Important School Announcements:

• Adventures of the Tartar Patrol PreK-3 Assembly Cancelled – Due to the number of days we have missed I am trying to be more judicious about the disruptions we have at school. We have cancelled the Tartar Patrol assembly this year.

• Teacher Observations – I’m going to try to get some formal and informal observations finished this week. If you’re someone who is on the formal observation cycle, let me know a date and time for me to come by. For informal, I’ll simply drop by for 10-20 minutes. I will also work with many of you to reschedule our formals we had planned in December.

• January Care Team Referrals – The January Student Care Team meeting is in a couple weeks, which means that referrals to the team are due a week from this Friday. Please let me know soon if you have any student and/or family situations you’d like to bring to the team. It’s best if you can get a release form signed (PDF or DOC), but we can also bring “hypothetical” student situations if you cannot get a release form signed. Let me know if you have questions about the team or any potential referrals.

• Staffing Updates – It is with sadness and joy that I bring you the following news.  Myka has accepted a job as the Bilingual Program Coordinator/Case Manager Personal Agent for The Mentor Network. Her job will be to case manage 39 customers in the Lane County area by assessing, planning, creating ISP’s, reaching out to service providers and helping intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals become self-sufficient. Some of her clients will be Spanish speakers. This is a dream job for Myka and fits many of her skills and interests. I could not be happier for her. However, we will greatly miss Myka. She has done an excellent job supporting our families, students, teachers and myself.  She has handled complex our financial transactions including Title 1 and Priority school funds with great skill. Her last day will be January 27.  I have posted a requisition to the district HR website this weekend and hope to have interviews in the 4th week of January or sooner.

• 4J Radio Training Video – If you are someone who uses one of the district radios, the Facilities Department has asked that you watch this linked 4-minute 4J Radio Training Video.

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day Resources and Opportunities – Martin Luther King Jr. Day is next Monday, so here are a few resources that may be worth checking out: Scholastic, National Education Association (NEA), and Education World.  Also, please join me  on MLK day to march together.   see this day as a “day on” not a day off. See the poster above and details for further information.

“The 2017 MLK Jr. March is posed to be the biggest to date. Come together! Show your support for social justice and inclusive communities. Using centers to differentiate for English Learners: Centers are used in multiple grade levels and in various subject areas as a way to provide small group instruction to a group of students while keeping the rest of the students in the class engaged in meaningful and productive practice. When working with English learners, centers can provide opportunities to deliver specific lessons to help students improve language skills, preview upcoming content or review previously presented content.
