CW:

Welcome back!  It has been a long and strange spring break.  I hope all of you are safe and staying positive.  I miss seeing you on a daily basis.  I look forward to re-connecting via distance learning next week.   I am learning about many programs and resources to help us connect and hope to Zoom soon – to see your faces. 

We have connected as whole staff, on grade level teams and individually with Zoom to help figure out next steps.   It has been nice to see the faces of my co-workers, learn some new skills, explore cool curriculum ideas and get my mind off the current situation in the world. 

I hope our learning together can “transport” us to the next steps and focus our energies on learning new systems/tools and re-igniting the learning in a fun way. 

HW:

Try to connect with family or friends using Zoom – maybe on your school iPad – get used to the features and try out different views – there are great video tutorials available through the Zoom website and through google/you tube.  Try out your microphone, lighting – try to find a good place to avoid noise and distractions from others in the house (if possible).   Have fun with it – try to connect with groups of people!

CW:

  • Completed Warm Up #4 – reviewed combining like terms – showing work!
  • Gave answers to last night’s HW #31 a-f and #32 a (with work to find variables in diamond problems)
  • Teams worked to fix/enhance HW – then, we reviewed tough problems from #31 – reviewing identifying terms – adding/subtraction of integers
  • Teams added #33 to HW and found the median and mean – plus, as an extension they created a box plot of the data
  • All classes checked #32 b-d – added work to show solving variable equations

Tuesday, March 10

CW:

  • Worked on “warm up” review W.S. #1-3 – reviewed algorithms – fixed errors – reviewed – identifying terms; using PEMDAS; combining like terms – writing expressions as sums so we can commute and associate
  • Read 4.2.1 Intro – discussed apple problem – 2 ways to solve! 
  • Team worked on 21; 22 and 23 – in spirals – teams discussed items first – then wrote brief (but thoughtful) bullet points to answer each question asked – ready to review in class on Wednesday!

  • Finish CW (in spiral) 4.2.1 #21-23 – due Wednesday

  • Discussed proportional relationships (vocabulary) – took notes on Multiple Representation of Proportional Relationships – specifically writing those relationships as a Rule; a Table; and a Graph – will have a copy of notes for those absent or taking the quiz

  • Reviewed 118 in detail and made the jump from unit rates to proportional/linear relationships – showed students coming attractions and introduced concepts such as graphing functions: input/output tables; slope of lines; how the changes in one variable affect the other variable – graphed the situation and predicted additional values based on solving proportions
  • Reviewed for quiz on Friday – reviewed answers/processes for many of the CW/HW problems from the past week – to review combining like terms and simplifying expressions. 
  • Passed on “green” CW/HW packet – due Monday, March 9th – will count for 3rd term since no time for make-up

  • Checked with team/partner – CW/HW from last Thursday/Friday – specifically we reviewed #98; 108 c-d; 112 – student teams presented work to show highly proficient work to support the correct answers – the rest of the class critiqued the work and we identified and fixed mistakes – adding work to make the communication more clear.
  • Reviewed specifics of the last quiz of the term – this Friday
  • Specifically, there are 6 problems – 10 total answers – will be scored on a proficiency basis – key concepts being tested: combining like terms; finding area and perimeter of tile collections; using the distributive property; Algebra tile basics

Tuesday, March 3

CW:

  • Reviewed the online algebra tiles and the algebra tiles in our textbook – compared to the tiles we have been using – online (e-tiles) are same as the tiles we have been using – books are reversed – shaded means positive (a bit confusing)
  • Specifically we reviewed as a whole class 4.3.3 #103 a; 104 all
  • With partner – students created tiles using app on e-book for problems #105-107 (all parts) – for problems 105 and 106 – use tiles online to manipulate – show work on paper (spiral) to show work by Identifying like terms (symbols) and drawing associative and commutative connections (connecting lines).
  • For 107 – creating the tiles online and drawing them on paper will help you find 2 different expressions (one with parentheses)

HW:

  • finish 4.3.3 #105-107 (in spiral) – due Wednesday
  • Make sure 98; 108 c-d; 112; 113; 117 completed – will review all above problems on Wednesday to prepare for Quiz on Thursday (or Friday)

Monday, March 2

  • Checked in with whole class on last Thursday’s HW – specifically reviewed items 95; 96 (reviewed dividing by a decimal); 93 and 98 (just gave answers)
  • gave all answers for 95; 96 (front of MN worksheet) and 93; 98 (on back side of worksheet) – reviewed some (will review hard ones on Tuesday)
  • Started to review the CW/HW from Friday – looked at #108 a and b – reviewed notation and work needed to show ID like terms and commuting and associating the like terms to simplify expressions – will review 108 c and d on Tuesday

  • Practiced a couple of problems involving negative factors
  • Worked on Inverse property of addition (opposites) – making zero’s – zero pairs
  • Specifically, we worked on p. 4 and p. 6 in the Algebra Tile Packet – writing numeric and variable expressions and representing those relationships using algebra tiles; making zero’s by adding opposites (or additive inverses)

Tuesday, February 11

CW:

  • Finished reviewing in detail Ch. 2 Test – reviewed all items and students enhanced and fixed errors
  • Took notes on multiplication of 2 negative numbers – why equals a positive – gave and described 3 proofs for this math fact – reviewed multiplication as repeated addition and subtraction – looked at the – sign as (subtraction, negative and as an opposite sign)
  • Played a bit in Algebra Tile packet – simplifying variable expressions

  • Returned Ch. 2 Test – reviewed all problems in periods 2, 4 and half in period 6 – only passed it back and quickly reviewed scoring only in period 1
  • Will review all – in detail (finish) on Tuesday
  • Discussion and feedback about Friday’s MAP testing – students gave feedback about positive aspects of the testing day and we shared some areas we (me or the school) could improve the next time we test for OSAS and MAP again in the Spring.

  • Today we also reviewed the checkpoints in the back of the textbook – specifically we reviewed Checkpoints 5-7 on pages 545 – 551

  • Get a good night’s rest – tomorrow is the day of testing  – Required district testing (MAP assessment) – both Math and Language Arts
  • Bring a reading book and pencils to the MAP test in your 1st period
  • Take every math question carefully – each question counts and the test “learns” your skills as you test – use scratch paper to list key facts and work out the problem – see if you can improve your proficiency level from the Fall MAP test scores!
  • No math class on Friday (will be testing with 1st period all day on MAP assessment)
