Welcome to 5th grade!
Below is some standard class information that you will learn about and
These are the skills 5th grade mathematicians will exercise as they practice math:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
The strategy students are encouraged to use in order to understand mathematical problems is CUBES.
C | Circle key numbers and units
What do I know? |
U | Underline the question or prompt
What am I being asked to solve? |
B | Box math “action” words
Which words indicate the math operations I will use? |
E | Eliminate and/or evaluate
What info is unnecessary? What steps do I need to take? |
S | Show your work AND check
Does my answer make sense? How can I check my work? |
Collaboration with our Friends:
Learners will often work collaboratively using team roles (resource manager, facilitator, recorder/reporter, and task manager) and will be given feedback on their work using a Collaboration Rubric 5th Grade.
Classes run smoothly only when routines, procedures, and rules are followed. Here are the student created class rules:

Here is a complete checklist of Ms. Ginger’s routines and procedures to be followed in class –> classroom procedures checklist
We are a PBIS School which means we also have 3 basic rules for all learners in all settings. These rules are:
1. Be Safe
2. Be Respectful
3. Be Responsible
