Zine Covers Assignment

Description – For this assignment, students are to research both print and online magazine/zine covers (and also inside pages) looking for examples of design style and how the cover promotes, advertizes, and ENTICES the reader/buyer to open the magazine/zine to explore what’s inside. Students will show 10 distinct designs covering a a range of content genres, ie. Music, Art, Food, Style, Outdoors, Sports, Hobbies, Travel, etc. Use the appropriate rule! You may see covers not appropriate for use – move on, find ones that are.

Students will upload and show covers write a brief statement (7-8 sentences) attending to design elements (C.R.A.P.), how they work to make the cover stand out. Elements include, typography, use of color, images, artwork, and of course C.ontrast, R.epetition, A. lignment, P.roximity.

I chose this Bon Appetite cover with the “Summer Scoop” ice cream cone because it had such appeal – the chocolate dip about to drip, the cherry ice cream in a soft melt… delicious. It looks even more dramatic and yummy against a stark white background. The content article titiles also stand out with a crisp sans-serif font, and secondary words are shown in a cherry red – nice way to draw from the color of the cherry ice cream.
