Hello WillaG families,
Recently we have seen many more kids talking about the adult Netflix series Squid Game and playing Red-Light/Green-light during recess. Normally this children game would not be an issue, except it is only coming to mind because of this series. In the first episode, 266 “contestants” are violently and graphically shot when they are caught moving after “Red-Light”.
Common Sense Media post professional, parent and children’s reviews of movies and TV shows. Here is an example of what they posted about Squid Game. “Parents need to know that the level of violence is very intense in Squid Game. Characters are systematically tortured and killed for the sadistic pleasure of a game master. Adults have sex, and there are threats of sexual violence: Women are grabbed by the hair and beaten. Themes concerning the highs one gets from gambling, winning, or conning money are a main focus.”
The show is rated for 16+ years old. Personal Note: My 17 year-old daughter wanted to watch it because high school kids were talking about it, so I joined her. I won’t be watching it with my 14 year old. Although it may be similar, this is NOT “another version of Hunger Games”. It is fairly easy to set viewing boundaries on Netflix for children.
