Review by Sam:
Artemis Fowl, 12, comes from a long line of criminal masterminds, and he is well on his way to eclipsing them all. With his father’s disappearance and his mother’s dissent into a severe depression, he is left with the run of the family’s Irish estate. The well-trained and massive Butler is at his service as Artemis goes about restoring the Fowl family fortune. He uncovers the sacred secrets of “The People,” the fairy elves who live underground, and concocts a plan to steal their gold. Meanwhile, Captain Holly Short, a fairy elf who is trying to rescue her job with the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance) Unit, gets assigned to go aboveground to capture a troll that is loose in Italy. Of course, Holly’s plans run afoul when Artemis uses her as his bait. The plot is preposterous, but the characters make a suspension of disbelief easy. As Artemis goes head to head with the magic of The People, he just might become a bit of a better human. The eighth and final book in the series, The Last Guardian, will be released on July 10, 2012.
