DECEMBER 2015
12/14 – 12/18
The week before winter break!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Please take time to think about our Driving Questions this week:
> Is globalization a force for economic growth, prosperity, and democratic freedom? Or is it a force for environmental devastation, exploitation of the developing world, and suppression of human rights? OR does globalization offer itself to both of these realities depending on who you ask?
> Is the globalization of culture good, bad, neutral or just a fact of life?

Also, since we are students of world geography and cultures we will look a little bit at how Christmas is celebrated in other countries. Here is a great link: Christmas Traditions Worldwide

This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world.

Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people canโ€™t buy more hours. Scientists canโ€™t invent new minutes. And you canโ€™t save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time youโ€™ve wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow. – Denis Waitley

(NPR article: How Columbus Sailed Into U.S. History, Thanks To Italians) We will look at a variety of maps and graphs and interpret data. We will also finish our essay this week.

I will be implementing a classroom management technique where students exhibiting low-level problem behaviors will be asked to leave my room and refocus in Mr. Malcolm’s room. The student will be expected to fill out a reflection sheet and then promptly return to class. Look here:refocus This is not a punitive measure but rather support in learning and practicing appropriate classroom behavior. Before I send a student to Refocus I will ask myself 3 questions: Is the behavior negatively impacting my ability to teach? Is the behavior preventing the student from learning? Is the behavior negatively impacting other students’ ability to learn? If I answer “yes” to any of those 3 questions the student will be asked to refocus. Please e-mail me if you have any questions and if any parents are reading this, please encourage your student to manage impulsivity and resist side-chatting, blurting out, and interrupting class with random, irrelevant information. Thank you so much! ๐Ÿ™‚

JUNE
6/1 – 6/5
โ€œPractice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.
Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives… Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula.
Here’s an assignment for tonight…: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever…Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash receptacles. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow.โ€ – Kurt Vonnegut

APRIL – Poetry Month
4/27 – 4/30

“The first thing to understand about poetry is that it comes to you from outside you, in books or in words, but that for it to live, something from within you must come to it and meet it and complete it. Your response with your own mind and body and memory and emotions gives a poem its ability to work its magi; if you give to it, it will give to you, and give plenty.” – unknown

“Poetry is my cheap means of transportation. By the end of the poem the reader should be in a different place from where he started. I would like him to be slightly disoriented at the end, like I drove him outside of town at night and dropped him off in a cornfield.” — Billy Collins
