Five more days! Given last week, the impending winter break, tomorrow’s field trip, and Friday’s assembly, we’re likely to see some interesting choices this week. Maintaining our high expectations staying focused on instruction will help set the tone that this is still a regular week.

  • Mary out Monday – FYI – Mary is out tomorrow and will return late Tuesday morning.

  • U of O Basketball Field Trip, Monday, December 16 9:30am-2:00pm
    • No go’s in your email – There are 31 students who either haven’t turned in their permission slips or whose parents have said no to them attending. That list has been emailed to all staff. Please send those students to the library at 9:30 when we go out to the buses.
    • Loading buses – We will call classes/grade levels down to load buses beginning at 9:15 or so. Buses will be cramped as there aren’t enough buses for all the schools who are going. Please disperse the adults throughout the bus and let parents know they cannot ride with us.
      Bus 1: Erickson, Glasson, Machado
      Bus 2:Brooks, Hinton, Goodban
      Bus 3:Stubbert, Dunlap, Walker
      Bus 4:Block, Hobie
      Bus 5:Backman, Stead, Davis
      Bus 6: Youngman, Wilcox, Kliever
    • Expectations – Linked here are the slides of our expectations for the trip. Please review these again Monday morning.
    • Lunches – Students may only bring a lunch. Backpacks and other things must stay at school. If students want to bring a bag, it must adhere to the clear bag policy linked in the slides. Please ask students to wait until they are in the arena to eat. They should not eat on the buses.
    • Focus Classes in the afternoon – When we return to school, students will head to their focus classes. This time will be similar to the afternoon after the river walk. Grade levels can decide if they will each keep their focus classes for the rest of the day or offer kids choices about what they’d like to do. Regardless of what teams do, the expectation is kids are in one room and stay there for the entire time. Kids should not be wandering the halls or moving around the building without adult supervision.

  • Repeat: Cyber Crimes Assembly, Friday, Dec. 20 @ 1:30 – The district has teamed up with EPD and Bethel school district to provide informational sessions for parents and students on cyber crimes. We will hold an assembly on Friday, Dec 20 at 1:30. Our presenter, Nate Henyan, is a school resource officer for Yakima School District #7 and the president of School Risk Solutions. Details on logistics are coming soon. Below is the parent training informational flyer. I’ll be attending on the training on the evening of the 16th to learn more and keep my preteen safe. Here’s a video of Rick Wistocki, who is presenting to parents and high schools if you’re interested in learning a little more.

  • Friday’s Assembly Schedule: Classes will be 34 minutes each on Friday. After 6th period, kids will return to Focus classes. We will call groups down to the gym. If there is time left after the assembly, kids will return to Focus to debrief until the end of the day.

    • 1st period = 9:00 – 9:34
    • 2nd period = 9:38 – 10:12
    • 3rd period = 10:16 – 10:50

  • January 6 Professional Development – Here is David Jacobsen’s PD email along with a list of PD sessions and schedule and TalentED Develop (TED) Registration Directions. Here’s the short version:

    • Classified: 8:00-10:30, register online at TalentEd Develop (TED) for a menu of training opportunities being offered at Chavez, ATA, and the Ed Center. 10:30-1:30 is travel, lunch, and prep time. 1:30-4:00 is Behavior Framework focused on disproportionality and bias in discipline practices, as well as other building PD topics.

    • Licensed: 8:00-10:30, register online, starting Monday, at TalentEd Develop (TED) for a menu of technology training opportunities at Churchill High School. 10:30-1:30 is travel and lunch (1 hour) and protected prep time (2 hours). 1:30-4:00 is Behavior Framework focused on disproportionality and bias in discipline practices, as well as other building PD topics.Of note for teachers, Justin Huntley, the 4J Technology Curriculum Administrator, told principals he would urge teachers to carefully read the descriptions of sessions before signing up and if you get into a session that’s not what you wanted, vote with your feet and go to a different session. He also said for principals to let him know if there are topics not being offered that would be of interest so he can organize them in the future.

Fun fact: the boy holding the monster in this pic is Michael Boyce’s little brother.

  • McKinney-Vento Staffing Update – Deborah Daily, 4J’s McKinney-Vento coordinator who works out of Howard, has retired but is staying on through the end of the year to train her replacements. Jennifer Volem will be the M-V Liaison for North and Sheldon region and Kristine Craft will be the liaison for the South and Churchill regions. Becca Larsen will remain in her position as M-V Unaccompanied Youth support and Foster Point Person.
  • Random Picture Because It’s Cool – I just wanted to share because I thought it was interesting – and slightly creepy 🙂
  • District Admin Updates – Sue Wilson, 4J Director of Curriculum, has accepted a position as Student Success Act Administrator at the Lane ESD. Sue has shifted to 0.25 FTE here in 4J thought January 7th to focus on writing transition plans, submitting budgets, and priorities for next year, completing Division 22, and wrapping up loose ends.

  • Student Success Act (SSA) Survey, Phase 2 – Phase 1 of 4J’s community outreach on how to spend SSA funds is now completed and we are in the midst of Phase 2. Community and Staff Forums are over, but there is now an SSA Phase II Online Survey for staff and community members to prioritize the top ideas that surfaced from Phase 1. Make sure your opinions are heard! The survey closes Tuesday, January 7th.

  • Teaching Students to Think About Thinking – Metacognition, or thinking about one’s thinking, is the core literacy of lifelong learners. When students have the skills to process and refine how they are learning, judiciously applying strategies and analyzing mistakes, they have the keys to self-directed growth. In this issue of ASCD Express, unpack the theory and practice behind the process.
