Le français

  • We correct sentences and explain grammatical errors including spelling, verb conjugation, and syntax.
  • We continue to internalize correctly conjugating verbs avoir (to have), être (to be), faire (to make or do), aller (to go), pouvoir (to be able), vouloir (to want), -er verbs, mettre (to put) and prendre (to take) in sentences. We will begin incorporating venir (to come) and finir (to finish) as well as -re verbs like entendre (to hear).
  • We use the words conjugué(e)(s) (conjugated), infinitif (infinitive), pronom sujet (subject pronoun), singulier (singular), pluriel (plural), majuscule (capital/uppercase letter),  et minuscule (lowercase letter) correctly.
  • We are alphabetizing correctly and continuing to learn to use our translating dictionaries.
  • We are writing in French in response to photo prompts.
  • We are reinforcing vocabulary, verbs, and commands by playing “Jacques a dit” (Simon Says in French)

This last week, in class, the students did three French assessments: comprehension, listening, and writing. There are a handful of students that are finishing up the listening assessment. We will do the speaking assessment next week.

We began a new “J’observe…” called “Une tornade de poissons” (A tornado of fish). We will be able to return to this activity this week.

Students continue to do “la phrase à corriger” daily, either in class or via Seesaw. I will be having students do Tap’Touche one day per week at school so I can guide students on their keyboarding.

Everyone did a much better job getting the items I asked for to school. Bravo! In case you haven’t yet, here are the things you need to have in French class every day:
1) Problèmes de logique, whichever one you are working on.
2) Your up-to-date Tap’Touche log.
3) Your French journal that we’ve been using all year.
4) Your iPad WITH THE KEYBOARD ATTACHED. The keyboard is not only needed for typing, it protects the screen and should ALWAYS be on the iPad when it’s being transported.

•We can add and subtract and solve problems with fractions.

•We can be flexible with fractions, converting improper and mixed fractions.

•At home, we’ll classify triangles by their sides & angles.

In school, students will continue to solve problems with fractions. They also will learn to read and create line plot graphs. Most testing is done for the year, but there will several short “Check Ups” to check students’ understanding of 4th grade concepts. Please do not help your child with any of the assignments in math that say “Check UP” or “No parent help.” These short assignments help Mme Shelli to see who needs more instruction in these areas.

English: Poetry

• We can analyze poetry’s meaning and form (lines, stanzas).

• We can identify rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and sensory details.

                                                      • We can write poems of our own.

Students will be analyzing poetry both in class and at home over the next several weeks. In school, students will read and analyze anchor texts. Discussions around author’s purpose and techniques will give students a toolbox to use as they write their own poetry. At home, students will learn about & attempt writing several types of poetry such as haiku, couplets, and cinquain.

Summer Skill-Building Suggestions

Dreambox -District-paid math subscription all summer for students.

Prodigy – Online math games & practice. Free, but parents will need to sign up.

Workbooks- Looking for paper & pencil work? You might consider purchasing a workbook. Select 4th-grade level for review & introduction to concepts we missed due to CDL. Look for problem-solving activities, measurement, fractions, multiplication & division practice. A few suggested workbooks: Singapore Math Level 3 or 4A or Critical Thinking for Math Grade 4.

Read, Read, Read. Consider the Eugene Public library’s summer reading contest.

Journal – Going on a trip or staying home? Have your child journal about it each day. They can add photos or drawings, too.

French – Have a sibling that also speaks French? Practice with him or her. Also, check out Les ressources de Mme Jana on this blog and try some of the many free opportunities to practice French over the summer.

Seeking hosts for French-speaking interns for 2021-2022

Two intern applicants from France are looking forward to joining us in late August for the coming school year. Hosting an intern is a terrific opportunity to support the strong educational experience of our kids in the French immersion program.

Here are some details about the expectations of hosting:

  • Host families are expected to provide 3 meals a day, a private bedroom, and transportation to and from school. (If transportation would be an issue, we can problem-solve other solutions. Don’t let that stop you from contacting us!)
  • The hosting period can be from 2-9 months depending on your family’s situation.
Both of our prospective interns are female, and they expect to be fully vaccinated before their arrival in the USA.

Interested? Have questions? Contact Cynthia Stenger Riplinger by phone (541-579-4606) or email (  charlemagneinternprogram@gmail.com).
