Welcome to Ms. Cockram’s Math Class

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I, Ms. Cockram, would like to take this opportunity to welcome your student to Cal Young. I look forward to spending the next year with your child setting goals, expanding capabilities, exploring challenges, and preparing them for high school.

I will be setting high standards for our students. Math class will have challenging assignments for them and the expectation for them to perform to the best of their abilities. The students will be actively involved in their education through projects, math investigations, along with a variety of other activities.

Rules for Ms. Cockram’s Class

  • Be in class on time.
  • Have materials ready and begin as soon as you arrive.
  • Treat everyone and everything with respect.
  • NO GUM, food, candy allowed in my classroom.
  • All math work must be done in pencil. Any work written in pen will not receive credit until it has been redone properly.
  • Be respectful.

Students will receive homework periodically during the week. In addition to this, any assignments not finished in class will become homework. If your child is absent, it is their responsibility to get the work they missed. I am available before and after school. Any assignments not turned in will be calculated into the grade as a zero. All zeroes will significantly lower the student’s final grade. For the first half of the year, I will accept late work through the end of each chapter/unit. Once your child has taken the chapter/unit test, I will not take any late work. For the second half of the year, I will be following the high school model and will not be accepting late work. This will help your student prepare for high school.

Your child will be receiving an agenda. This tool will be used to develop personal responsibility and organizational skills. Your child will be required to keep track of daily activities and homework assignments for Math class.

8th grade math:

All assignments and tests are given raw points and then averaged to a overall average.

Algebra I Students: (Based off of high school grading system)

60% of grade will be based off of Assessments (Chapter tests and Quizzes)

40% of grade will be based off of assignments (classwork, homework, projects)

Grading scale

100 – 90% = A

89 – 80%   = B

79 – 70%   = C

69 – 60%   = D

Below 60 % is a failing grade

I encourage you to take an active role in your child’s education. Please talk to them about what they are doing in class. Please encourage your student to check my blog: https://blogs.4j.lane.edu/cockram_k/ for updates on weekly assignments and office hours. However, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, either by phone or e-mail.
