I began to use a standing classroom during the last two school years.  Due to the success of that experiment, I have decided to revive the standing classroom for the rest of the 2017-2018 school year.  In this blog, I am going to document how this year is going, keeping evidence of student improvement in attentiveness and overall health.

There is an abundance of research on the topic of how standing benefits us.  It is overwhelmingly positive.  Here are a few articles that outline the health benefits of standing:

There are also many articles outlining why a standing classroom is beneficial to learning.

While standing has incredible benefits, there is a right to stand and a wrong way to stand.  Kelly Starrett is a mobility expert and has a website http://www.mobilitywod.com.  He is very passionate about kids standing in class.  He and his wife Juliet run a nonprofit named http://standupkids.org.  Kelly has a video on youtube describing the right way to stand:

Based on my experience from the 2015-2016 school year, I have some recommendations to be a successful stander in class.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. High heels and flip flops don’t work. If you wear high heels or flip flops bring a pair of socks to class and stand in your socks.
  • Stand up straight.
  • I have three different table heights.  Choose the one that puts your forearms parallel with the ground.
