Hi Everyone,

Sixteen items of note for this week:

• Job Postings – The 1st Grade Job Posting is now live and closes Tuesday. and the SPED EA Job Posting is also up and closed Wednesday. Tell anyone you know who’d be good for these jobs to apply!

• Picture Day, THURSDAY – Linked here is the Picture Day Schedule that was shared earlier. Pictures will be in the gym. I haven’t connected with Alex, but I’m guessing PE will be outside for morning classes.

• CLASSIFIED: Friday PD/Planning Day (or help move Title & Calming Room) – The Classified PD Sign-Up shared last week is now required for all EAs, SPED, Title, and Kindergarten. These are three-part PD workshops, so pick which one sounds most useful for you. HOWEVER, for this Friday, if anyone wants to ditch the PD and instead help Title, Calming Room, and SPED shift spaces to make way for the new 1st grade classroom, that is also an option.

• LICENSED: Friday PD/Planning Day – Just like last week, downtown doesn’t know or hasn’t shared the plan for this Friday’s PD/Planning Day. All that’s on the 4J PD Calendar is “Lang Arts Adoption (5.5 hours).” I did get asked by a district admin on Friday if they could use the Holt Cafeteria for grade 3/4/5 PD, which leads me to believe all Sheldon Region 3/4/5 teachers will be at Holt. No word what the plan is for K/1/2. For times, there were some times on the PD Calendar ealier, but they have since been deleted, so stay tuned for more “Timely Communication.” UPDATE: Not official, but I heard from a TOSA this is the plan for Friday:

4-5 meets at Holt (Moved to a HS)
PD, 8:00-1:30
Lunch (on your own) 11:30-12:15
Teacher Planning, 2:00-4:00

K-3 meets at Holt (Sheldon Region)
PD, 8:00-1:45, 15 min. longer since they are in their home region and have less travel time back to own schools
Lunch (on your own) 11:30-12:15
Teacher Planning, 2:00-4:00

• Jog-a-Thon, Holt Bolt Updates – The Holt Bolt is on Wednesday, Oct. 19th. Times will be:

K/1/2
8:35 Go Outside
8:45-9:45 Running
10:00 Go Inside

3/4/5
10:15 Go Outside
10:25-11:25 Running (5th will miss library and PE/Music this year, but can take their prep by missing part of the jog-a-thon. We should have plenty of coverage.)
11:40 Go Inside (3rd grade goes straight to lunch @ 11:40)

As we did last year:

• All morning recesses are canceled. 1st-5th teachers are welcome to take their morning break during their jog-a-thon time.
• KG and 1st lunch recesses will be in the gym. Kids should move through the hallway to the gym. K/1 teachers will pick up from the gym.
• 2nd grade lunch recess will have to be soft play only while things get finished and cleaned up.
• EA support will be limited during the jog-a-thon because of supervision needs. Morning groups MIGHT be canceled. Please keep an eye out for an update as we get closer.

Information was given to teachers on Friday that should go home in Monday Mailers this week.

PAHS is still working out some details (mostly regarding the prize structure), but it’ll mostly run the same as last year, with kids starting on hard play, running around the building and keeping track of laps with a badge on a lanyard they’ll scan each time they finish a lap.

PAHS emailed some updates and I will keep folks up to date once shirts arrive or if anything changes, but we’ll have a lot of the same fun as last year with music, bubbles, a mister, and other surprises!

• Vision Screening (K-3) & Dental Screening (K-5), Oct. 21 – Not this week, but Friday next week , from 9:00-12:00 in the gym, is our annual Vision and Dental Screening. All K-5 student will do the dental screening and K-3 students will also do the vision screening. Schedule is coming soon!

• Classroom Moves Update – Slight change of plan. SPED, Title, and Calming Room staff met last week and instead of the Calming Room moving into their old space (Whitney’s current SPED teaching space), they will move into the back half of Emily’s Classroom. This lets Whitney stay in her current space, gives the Calming Room more space, and allows Emily to utilize the Calming Room for SPED students needing breaks. Once this move happens, the Calming Room will no longer be able to offer alternative recesses for students.

It’s great that we got a fourth 1st grade classroom, which necessitated this move, but mid-year classroom shuffles are always hard, so thank you everyone for helping figure out the least disruptive plan.

• Leadership Plan Sign-Up – We’ll vote on the Leadership Plan with names attached at our next Staff Meeting on Oct. 18th. If you’d like to sign up for any of the open positions, please add your name to the Holt Leadersip Positions Doc by the end of the week.

• Talent Ed Goals Due 10/31 and Optional Shared Staff Goals – The TalentEd Self Assessment was due for all staff, both classified and licensed, the end of September and Staff Goals are due for licensed staff at the end of this month. If you’d like to use a set of goals a group teachers helped develop last week, you can feel free to cut-and-paste these Optional SEL Shared Staff Building Goals into TalentEd before the Oct. 31 deadline.

• DHS Reports, Now Use DataPort – I’m not sure principals were ever told this, but Darla discovered there is now an online reporting form staff should use to document all DHS reports of abuse and neglect. For the new reporting system:

1. Go to 4J DataPort
2. The first time you log on, click RESET PASSWORD, and follow the direction to set up your account.
3. Click DHS DOCUMENTATION
4. Click CREATE NEW DHS REPORT
5. Select your school and type in the student name.
6. Student info will auto populate and all you need to enter is:
• Description of the Event
• Perpetrator Information
• Other Information (if relevant)

Note that you will need to be on the 4J Network to access the 4J DataPort and cannot access it from home unless you’re using the 4J VPN. Linked here is a PDF Preview of the DHS Online Form. I’ll plan to go over this form at a future Staff Meeting.

• Lost & Found (stop your class for a visit) – A month and a half in to the school year, the lost & found is already building up. Please consider pausing your student lines on the way to PE, Music, Library, Lunch, etc. to let kids see if any of the items there belong to them.

• Field Trip Volunteers – I asked HR about being able to edit Field Trip Request Forms so you can add volunteers later, but they said you should instead email Melissia Morphis <morphis_m@4j.lane.edu>, though if they don’t require it when you first submit, I’m not sure they’re really tracking this. As long as your volunteers passed their background check, I’m fine with them volunteering.

• REPEAT: Site Council Reps Still Needed – Site Council is coming up this Thursday and we still have 1 classified opening (Jackie finished her term), 1 classroom licensed opening (Liz’s term ended). Jenny volunteered to be the Specialist Licensed Rep. Here’s the current list.

Admin Rep: Allan Chinn
Classified Rep: Cheryl Yorges (year 2)
Classified Rep: Lisa Goff (year 2)
Classified Rep:
Licensed Rep (classroom): Candace Lovato (year 2)
Licensed Rep (classroom): Geoff Parks (year 2)
Licensed Rep (classroom): Lesli Harmon (year 2)
Licensed Rep (classroom):
Licensed Rep (specialist): Jenny (year 1)
Parent Rep: Billie Jo Rodriguez (year 2)
Parent Rep: Jill Ritz (year 2)
Parent Rep: Sallie Lees (year 2)

Outgoing and past reps are welcome to re-join, but let me know and/or add your name to the 22-23 Team Sign-Up Sheet if you’re willing to volunteer your time to serve on Site Council.

• Make Sure Doors Latch – Make sure exterior school doors completely close and latch. It’s that time of the year when air pressure changes and doors sometimes do not close all the way.

• Professional Judgment Versus “Fidelity” – 4J has backed off using the term “Fidelity” and this ASCD Article discussed how too much emphasis on fidelity implementing programs diminishes teachers. “Telling teachers exactly how they are supposed to teach leaves little room for them to share their own ideas, knowledge, and expertise. At worst, too much focus on fidelity can lead teachers to feel like they’re working on an assembly line putting widgets together rather than engaging in the complex, important art of inspiring and educating tomorrow’s leaders.” As an antidote, Knight suggests listening to teachers, encouraging teachers to customize programs to their students, and focusing on student learning.
