Private Lesson Information
As students learn more about different instruments and develop basic musical skills they may be interested in pursuing specific instruments further. The best way to build up skills on an instrument is through private lessons. Private lessons allow students to work individually with a teacher further their specific needs.
General information:
- Lessons are usually 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or an hour long depending on the student’s desires and needs. Beginners and younger students generally start with 30 minute lessons. Lessons are usually weekly at a specified time.
- Prices range from $25 a half hour and up. Prices vary by teacher and instrument and are usually based mostly on the experience of the teacher and the distance they have to travel (if they travel to homes). Some teachers require an entire month paid in advance and some allow payment after each individual lesson.
- Teachers can teach from a music studio, a music store, a home studio, or travel to your house.
Things to consider:
- What are your student’s goals on the instrument? (make sure your teacher’s curriculum aligns with your goals)
- If you are not sure what your goals are, ask the teacher about what their goals for the student will be.
- There are pros and cons to taking lessons at a studio, store, or from your home. Lessons at a store allow convenient access to music supplies when needed but tend to only be available in strict 30 minute windows. Studios often provide the possibility of recitals where students can have a chance to perform in public or perform with other students. Lessons from your home provide convenience and flexibility.
- Make sure the teacher has experience teaching the age group of your students. Younger students and older students have different needs and different expectations. Progress is also much slower the younger the student is.
- Some teachers will teach the parents and the students at the same time. This is the most effective way for students to learn because parents will be better able to help the students practice correctly.
