Removing/Installing Crank Arms

Tools Needed:

  • Allen Wrenches (Bike Multi-Tool)
  • Socket Wrench
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Adjustable Wrenches (May Need 2)
  • Crank Arm Puller Tool

Tips To Remove Crank Arm:

  • Remove the chain off the front cassette.  Note: do not break the chain, just let it sit behind the cassette.

  • Remove the plastic cap in the middle of the cassette with a screwdriver.

  • Loosen the bolt or nut with the appropriate tool (socket wrench or allen wrench).  Unscrew and remove bolt or nut.

  • Unscrew (but not all the way) the smaller end of the crank puller tool

  • Insert bigger end of crank puller tube into middle of cassette. Hand Tighten to make sure the treads are lined up correctly.

  • Use a wrench to make tighter, but do not over tighten.

  • Tighten the smaller end of the crank puller tool until you feel the spindle.

  • Use two wrenches.  Use the wrench that is closer to the bike will hold the bolt in place.  Use the wrench that is farther away to turn the crank puller tool into the cassette.  You will feel resistance at first, and then it will become easier.  When it becomes easy, the crank arm has become loose.

  • Remove the crank puller tool from bike and you will be able to remove the crank arm (and front cassette) with your hands.Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 10.16.02 AM
  • Repeat the same steps to remove the crank arm off the other side of the bike.

Tips To Install New Crank Arm:

  • Push new crank arm on to the spindle.

  • Thread Bolt by hand, then use a socket wrench or allen wrench.

  • Install the dust cap.

  • When installing the crank arm on the other side, make sure the crank arm will be 180 degrees from the installed crank arm.  In other words, if the first crank arm is facing down, the crank arm on the opposite side must be facing up.

  • Install the cassette and tighten the bolt by hand, then with a wrench.

  • Put the dust cap back on.
