Installing and Adjusting Rear Derailleur

Tools Needed:

  • Allen Wrenches
  • Cable Cutters
  • Grease
  • Lubricant

Tips:

  • Put grease on the bolt that holds the derailleur to the frame’s drop out

  • Tighten derailleur to drop out with allen wrench

  • Install Chain (see page for installing chain)
  • Run the derailleur cable through the rear derailleur

  • Tighten the H Screw to  line up the top pulley with the smallest sprocket.  Turn screw in quarter turn increments to move it.

  • Pull the cable tight and tighten the bolt that holds the cable in place

  • Shift bike into largest Gear
  • Loosen screw in the back until the derailleur pulley is resting against the cassette.

  • Tighten the v screw until the rear derailleur pulley is not resting against the cassette.

  • Set your L Screw.  Your L Screw will prevent your derailleur from jumping into your spokes.  Shift into the biggest gear.  If your derailleur is in your spokes, tighten the L screw a quarter turn.

  • Shift through all gears to make sure each one shifts properly
  • Clip your wire (if too long) and add an end cap
