How To Replace Your Gear Cables
Tools Needed:
- Allen Wrench
- Wire Cutter
- File
- Pick
Tips:
To Remove Old Cable:
- Shift bike into the smallest gear
- Loosen bolt on derailleur with allen wrench
- Cut the frayed end off the cable
- Make sure you know how the cable is attached to the handle bars and make a note of it. In the picture below, the cable is attached by tape to the handle bars. There was also bar tape (hand grip tape) over the cable.
- Pull the inner cable out of the rear mec. Pull the cable away from the bike’s frame. If there is a rubber piece over the cable (know as the outer cable), you may slide that off. Put that aside, we will want to use that again when we install the new cable.
- Remove the cable from the gear shift
To Install New Cable:
- Thread your new cable through the shifter
- Slide the e outer cable (long plastic piece) on the cable and put it in place on the bike’s handle bars.
- Thread the inner cable through the barrel adjuster on the frame
- Thread the cable through the cable guide on underneath the bottom bracket
- Slide on the new outer cable, and place into the frame stock
- Put the end of the cable back through the barrel adjuster in the mec.
- Make sure your barrel adjuster is tight. Then tighten the cable with your allen wrench.
- Manually push the mec up the cog as you turn the pedals.
- Turn the pedals again and shift the gears. Untwist the barrel adjuster to move the chain up each cog
- Double check that everything is moving smoothly. If it is, cut the excess cable with wire cutters.
