Replace Brake Cables
Tools Needed:
- Allen Wrench
- Wire Cutter
- File
- Pick
Tips:
To Remove Old Cable:
- Undo Grip Tape (you do not need to do this step if the cable is already exposed)
- Loosen the crimping bolt with your allen wrench. The crimping bolt is near the tire. It is the bolt on the brake that holds the break in place
- Remove the cable from the brakes.
- Undo the cap on the back of the hand brakes.
- Pull the old cable off the bike. You should find it attached to the back of the breaks
- Make sure you keep track of all small tubes (the picture below is are called outer cables). We will be able to use them better.
To Install New Cable:
- Put new cable through the back of the hand brakes.
- Replace the cap on the back of the hand brakes.
- If you are replacing the outer cable, cut your outer cable to the same length as the old one.
- Put the inner cable through the outer cable
- Put the outer cable into the shifter
- Thread the inner cable through to the brakes. Note, this might look differently on each bike.
- Hold the brake pads against the rim of the wheel with one hand as you…
- Tighten the bolt with your other hand
- Test the brake to make sure the brake is smooth and how you want it:
- Cut the excess cable, leaving about an inch showing
- Repeat process for the back break
