7th Grade Language Arts
September 5th, 2017 by young_co

Writing
The areas of emphasis in 7th grade writing are the narrative and descriptive modes. Students will write five paragraph essays, develop logical organization, and use focused, descriptive language. Students will also build their skills with conventions and spelling.

Speaking
Socratic seminars and other discussion formats will be implemented to enhance critical thinking skills and foster understanding across differences of opinion and perspective.

Reading
The areas of focus in 7th grade reading are:

  • increased vocabulary
  • locating information in a text
  • summarizing a text
  • identifying main ideas
  • understanding the difference between literal and inferential writing
  • making predictions

Arts Integration
Kelly Middle School has been involved in a three year grant, called ArtCore, designed to help integrate the arts into content area classes. In language arts, students will create journals that they will use throughout the year for reflection and documentation of their learning that will be expressed with words and a variety of styles of artistic expression.

Student Interests
I strive to create assignments and units that allow students to master the basics while pursuing areas of personal interest. Students will also be presented with choice in how they demonstrate understanding as often as it is logical and possible.
