ECON: Tuesday, 11/24/09
We started with a show-and-tell of merit and demerit goods that students brought to share with the class. We explained how each good affected third parties in a positive or negative way. We also determined whether the effect came from the production or consumption of the product.
Students received a new externalities study guide. Mr. Yamada explained how goods can be rival or excludable and how these characteristics can determine the externalities of a product. Students chose groups for the externalities project and chose whether to complete the video or the poster option.
Homework: Complete the activity classifying excludable and rival goods (5 points). If you were gone, check page 136 of your textbook for explanations of “rival” and “excludable.” Check out the options for the externalities video assignment and the externalities poster assignment to decide which one you want to do and check with friends to see if you were picked for a group.
Externalities project due Tuesday, 12/8 (50 points).

ECON: Friday, 11/20/09
Students turned in the first current events commentary today. Mr. Yamada introduced the concept of market failure and its two major sub-categories, abuse of monopoly power and externalities. We viewed the film The Lorax and saw examples of negative externalities in action.
Homework: Bring a merit or demerit good to class for show-and-tell (5 points). A merit good is a product that has a positive effect on someone who didn’t produce, sell or buy it. A demerit good has a negative effect on someone who didn’t produce, sell or buy it. In other words, the product must affect a third party bystander. If you cannot find a good to bring in physically, you may bring a picture of such a good.
