Week 11 Newsletter for November 16-20

Dear Families,

Thanks so much to all of you who attended Holt Night Out at Papa’s Pizza last week.  We appreciate your support, hope you got to visit with other families and had fun! This week we have a special Winter Book Fair going on. Please see flier.  It’s a great opportunity to buy reasonably priced books, get some shopping done and support our school.

Would you like to be more informed and involved with our school?  Attend a PAHS (Parents at Holt School) meeting this Tuesday from 6-7:30 pm.  Free pizza dinner for you and the family and free child care.  SITE council is another option to get involved.  We meet Thursday at 5 pm.

A guest teacher (aka sub) will be here for me Wednesday morning while I attend a math training and again Friday afternoon.

I’d like to know more about how helpful IXL and RAZ Kids are to you and your family.  Would you please take a couple minutes to complete a survey about your usage?  These licenses are a bit pricey and I am trying to determine if I want to use limited class funds to update my subscriptions.  Thank you!  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BTTFHX7

This week:

MATH:  Sorting and comparing polygons.  Additionally, your child should be able to recite the days of the week, months of the year, idenify the coins and tell their value, count and write numbers to 120, count by 5s and 10s, and show his/her understanding of place value by drawing visual representations of numbers.  If your child is “shaky” on those skills, please pratice them at home.

READING:  We are working on sequencing story events and identifying narrator of story as we read about music.  We are blending words with l-blends (blame, plus, sleep, etc).

WRITING:  Writing letters with zigs and curls.  Writing statements and using commas when writing dates and series of items in a list.  Students will hear, discuss and write stories about family activities.  Discuss with your child special things your family does together so they have some writing inspiration.

SCIENCE:  Observing, describing and investigating what happens to liquids when we mix them.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  7 continents and 4 oceans, narrowing down where we live by planet, continent, country, state, city, home address.  Does your child (still) know his/her address and phone number?

HOMEWORK:

1. 20 minutes at home reading.  Memorize HFWs and read little books which emphasize our sound of the week.  Hexagon group will have ReadWorks story “My Life”  and “Musical Instruments Djembe” do text dependent questions instead of little books.  RAZKids is always available.

2.  Handwriting, if your child was assigned extra practice

3.  Optional:  work on math using IXL site.  Topics that support our learning this week are in GEOMETRY SECTION:  They are K1, K5, K7, K9, K11, K12.  Always helpful topics that support previous learning are in COUNTING AND PATTERNS: A4-A13.  Those looking for a challenge could do: MONEY: O1-O6.
