Week 9 Newsletter: November 2nd

Dear Families,

It was wonderful meeting with you last week.  Thank you so much for attending conferences.

Thanks for your patience with IXL log ins.  We will try to work through all the kinks tomorrow and then I’ll send home a new log in sheet.

Box Top Contest underway.  We appreciate each and every boxtop. 🙂  I will find out the results of the school supply contest as soon as they’re announced later this week!  Thanks again for your support.

We have picture retakes and a health screening this Wednesday.  Students will have a quick check of their teeth and eyes. Reports will be sent home.  If you ever have health concerns about your child, please let me know.  With the support of Nurse Laurie and school social worker Carmella, we are often able to connect famiies with resources they need. If your child has food allergies, please let me know asap as we occassionally I serve food for celebrations or to go with lessons.

This week:

MATH:  Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.  Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles)  to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

READING:  We will work on understanding characters and messages in traditional stories such as Jack and the Wolf and the Three Little Pigs.  Our phonic emphasis is short a as in ran and vocabulary emphasis is shades of meaning.

WRITING:  For handwriting students are working on “sinker” letters j, g, q,and p in handwriting.  For grammar, they are working on writing complete sentences.  For composition, students will hear, discuss and write stories about their favorite places.  They will work on rereading and adding more to their stories.

SCIENCE:  Observing, describing and investigating liquids

HOMEWORK:  Wow! Lots of October calendars were turned in last week! Those students will come home with a  gift certificate for a personal pizza from Pizza Hut and a free book!  A November reading calendar will be coming home.

1. 20 minutes at home reading.  Memorize HFWs.  Some students are working on kindergarten words, others are working on first grade words and still others are working on Fry’s list of 1000 words.

2.  Some students were assigned a half a page or whole page of handwriting a school night.  Please assist your child as needed.  it’s important they do not not reinforce poor habits such as backwards letters, inefficient strokes or writing letters on the wrong  lines.

3.  Optional:  work on math using IXL site.
