Progress Reports

Mid-term grades were completed Friday, October 23rd. Look for progress reports via postal mail.

PeaceJam
PeaceJam class has decided to focus their community service project on helping the homeless in Eugene/Springfield. To that end, they have been working on two projects. They are planning a social to be held at Monroe from 7-9 p.m. on Nov. 20. We are still looking for chaperones. Please contact me at Monroe ASAP if you are able to chaperone. On Nov. 21, we are having a garage sale to be held in the cafeteria at Monroe. We would gladly accept any assistance or donations for these events. Students have been working hard to plan these events. They will be making classroom presentations to share the projects with other students and staff in the school.

The PeaceJam class learned that the Nobel Laureate participating in the April conference is Jody Williams. I hope that all of the 8th grade students will attend. The cost of the weekend is $75. Some scholarships will be available.

Students have decided that the community service project this term will be assisting the homeless population in Eugene. We will be discussing the details of the project this week.
8th Grade Block

Languge Arts
Most edited rough drafts of book reports will be handed back this week. Many reports were turned in late, and my illness last week slowed the grading process. Students will need to incorporate all corrections into their final copies. Final book reports should be typed, double line spaced with 1″ margins in 12 point simple font, no script or decorative fonts. The final copy will be worth 100 points. Points will be as noted on the book report guidelines. The first final drafts are due Nov. 9.

Some of the Signs of Fall paragraphs will be returned Monday for revision. Please make the corrections and turn the word processed corrected copy in (with the last copy) by Wednesday Nov. 4.

The twelve important events along with pictures or drawings are due Tuesday Nov. 3. We will be putting the final copies together into posters during class on Tuesday.

Social Studies
Beginning the week of Nov. 16, we will have an artist in residence attending both parts of block class. She will perform pieces that she has written about her life and the lives of others in her family. Following the presentation, she will guide the students to write about their lives. In preparation of this project, students have created and performed a personal timeline. Students will learn that history is a living changing thing. They will have the opportunity to see their place in history.
