Students will learn how to write, produce, direct and film PSAs (Public Service Announcements) that will air over our school wide network. Students will learn to operate all of the broadcast studio equipment for producing morning announcements and special events. Students will also have the opportunity to anchor and help produce the live daily morning announcement broadcasts.

We are using Vimeo, a video sharing site for serving student video projects. Students in the Digital Media classes will have individual accounts for sharing their work.

Students research and find 3 “good” examples of Climate Change PSAs – focus should be on PSAs that present scientific facts, give examples, historical perspective at local, national, and global levels.
On a separate ePortfolio page, name the PSA, give a brief description, and statement as to the value/quality of the PSA.

10 PSA Assignment
Students research PSAs on topics relevant to middle and high school students (content age appropriate for Middle School students). Students use Google and YouTube, and other links to online sources for their searches. They are to find 10 PSAs that feel feel deliver a message effectively, engage the audience so the topic resonates. Attention is given to video and editing technique, and length of the PSAs. Research to complete this assignment takes approximately 3-4 class periods.

#1 PSA Pick Assignment
Students pick their top choice PSA from the 10 they researched for the first assignment. They are to use Youtube, Vimeo, or other WordPress embed tags when creating the assignment page. This will stream the video directly to the page for viewing. Students must give a brief description of the PSA, and a rationale for their choice.

Use these sites to find music that is free to use. Most popuar music you may want to use for your PSAs is copyrighted and can not be used. This is especially true when you use Vimeo – they are deleting videos that have copyrighted material, including music.
PSA#1 (Individual Project) – Students learn how to make a Public Service Announcement using only pictures, no video footage. After lecture and multiple examples of student work, students brainstormed to pick topics for their PSAs. Students must develop the PSA with detailed documentation as follows, from start to finish. Content will be researched using a variety of proven sources, and images will be collected from various online and offline sources as well.
Students will use Adobe Photoshop to prepare images – size must be 800×600 pixels or 1026×768 pixels for optimal production using iMovie. Students are encouraged to use text screens to enhance their message, and an audio track must be included. PSAs are to be at one of the following lengths: 30 sec., 45 sec., or 60 sec.
Students will be graded on these assignment posts and in the standard prescribed assignment posting format on their ePortfolios. (Posting format is on my instructional blog):
– Elevator Speech: Narrative paragraph(s) describing the PSA, intent/message, audience, and sources of content. (5 points)
– PSA Script & Images: Scene by scene set-up, and detailed description of content and flow. (10 points)
– PSA Production – Rough Cut: Using iMovie, content is assembled and edited for presentation – streamed from Vimeo. (20 points)
– PSA Edits: Students take peer evaluation feedback and create an edits list that will be applied to their Final Cut (5 points)
– PSA Production – Final Cut: Students post edited final video on ePortfolio PSA#1 page – streamed from Vimeo (10 points)

They use the Shots and Angles handout to reference 5 video camera filming techniques, then compile the footage in iMovie to show their work. PSA#2 (Solo Video Project) – Students build on their first PSA experience to make a Public Service Announcement using stills and video footage. Students brainstorm topic ideas as a class to pick topics for their PSAs. Students work solo or in teams of 2-4 students. Students must develop the PSA with detailed documentation as follows, from start to finish. Content will be researched using a variety of proven sources, and images and video will be collected from various online and offline sources, and locations.
Students will use (Adobe Photoshop to prepare) still images – size must be 800×600 pixels or 1026×768 pixels for optimal production using iMovie, and shoot video footage using multiple angles/combinations of techniques (learned from video angles exercise) and will be edited using iMovie. Students are encouraged to use text screens to enhance their message, and an audio track must be included. PSAs are to be in a range of 90-180 sec. Longer length PSAs are OK with script approval.
Students will be graded on assignment posts and on the standard prescribed assignment posting format on their ePortfolios. Students will be given an individual grade. (Posting format is on my instructional blog):

Broadcast Studio Training
Students are trained on all of the broadcast studio equipment, including practice being an anchor and production director. Students have a checklist of all functions and activities that is signed off on as they complete each job. This is an ongoing exercise and all students should have completed the training by midterm.

Students sign up for 2 sessions of live broadcast using studio equipment, anchoring, or directing. Students must complete both sessions to receive full points.
