Hello Everyone,

I am so sad not to be in the classroom with our students. Please email me at olsen@4j.lane.edu if you have any special requests, questions, etc. I have been thinking of things that students can do at home:

  1. Read at least 30 minutes each day.
  2. World Heroes – For students that have not finished their World Heroes projects, it would be great if they can try to complete them at home. They know how to share their latest work with me on google docs. When they share their latest updates, it pops up in my email and then I know who has been working from home. I promise I will review and respond.
  3. Passion Projects – Many 5th graders have completed and presented their world heroes projects and are now working on a passion project. This involves, reading, research, writing and focusing on a subject(s) that are of particular interest to each student. Topics range from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Victorian Fashion to Easter Island. I would love students to continue on their learning quest!
  4. DreamBox – Accessing DreamBox for math practice would be great https://clever.com/products/badges
  5. There are other recommended sites that students can access:
    1. Mystery Doug – a fun science site with lots of interesting lessons. Try this link: https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning
    2. Scholastic – a good site for interesting reading articles that all students can enjoy. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html
    3. Newsela – I have placed some reading assignments on this site. One is about the Corona Virus and the other is about Passion Projects. https://newsela.com  (Let me know if you can’t find the articles that I have assigned to all of our 5th graders.)
    4. Symbaloo – Students can still access Symbaloo until the end of the year. Students can access Typing Agent and lots of other activities that they are used to if they have internet access. https://mccornack.symbaloo.com/
    5. 25 Virtual Field Trips – a fun site to explore lots of cool places in the world!  https://www.weareteachers.com/best-virtual-field-trips/

Please stay healthy and stay in touch!
