Course Description: Spanish IV is a College Now/IB course taught in Spanish that encourages students to refine their speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills. Writing skills are enhanced through essay, poetry, and journal writing.  Listening skills are sharpened through dictations, interactions with other Spanish speakers and via TV and radio reports and programs. Students are expected to read, comprehend and discuss short stories, poetry, and plays from various sources.  Grammar study includes an in-depth review of previously learned materials, as well as the introduction of the remainder of tenses and grammar concepts not yet covered in the lower levels. The course is rounded out with readings, discussions, guests, cultural projects, and more.  Students who receive a C or better will be eligible for College Now Credit 201, and Students who are in Spanish V will be eligible for 201.

Course Outcomes:

I DO NOT ROUND UP, AS I DO NOT USE DECIMAL PLACES IN CONFIGURING GRADES

Grades are weighted in the following manner:

40% of your grade is based on Summative Assessment

30% of your grade is based on Formative Assessment/Quizzes

20% of your grade is based on in class Assignments/Pesos (This will be entered at the end of each trimester)

10% or your grade is based on homework

NOTE: I do not provide extra credit to replace assignments, projects, quizzes or tests.

Cuaderno de español- Each student will need a college-ruled spiral notebook (about 80 pages) for Spanish in class work.  This notebook will be called Cuaderno de Español students will do all their warm-ups (repasos), homework, and in class assignments in this notebook. At the end of the term, students will show me their Cuaderno de Español to receive pesos.

Paquete de español- I will provide you with a Spanish packet that it will include all of the printed notes.  This packet will become your study guide for final exams and your study guide to review when you moved on to the next level. I will give specific instructions on how I want you to review the notes.  The Paquete de español is worth 100 points.

This packet will have your school year calendario. Each day you will be responsible to write the homework, when we will have quizzes, test, and due dates for the projects.

If you show me your detail calendario You will receive pesos. I encourage parents/guardians/caregivers to ask you to show them your Calendario.

Homework will be assigned at the end of each class period.  Everyday students need to look at the HW board and write it down on the HW calendar that I will provide.  Students must have their homework ready on their desk at the beginning of class to receive a stamp indicating the work was done on time.  This stamp will also be placed on students homework calendar. Always keep your homework calendar with the collected stamps, since it’s the only paper that you will turn in to me for a grade!

Assignments:  You will be doing worksheets, readings, and short writing pieces, as well as working in your textbook, workbook, and packets. All final written assignments must be done in blue or blank ink or type.  Also students will have to join in to the Spanish IV google classroom, some of the assignments will be placed there. I will provide information on how to join the class later. To label your the format of your final papers, please become familiar with the following webpage: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/

Late work will not be accepted without penalty.  In order to receive 100% on an assignment if you are absent, you need to either: 1) check the webpage or 2) call a friend/classmate to get the homework and turn it in on the day you return.  If there are extenuating circumstances, other arrangements might be made.  Send me an email. Tests and quizzes missed due to excused absences must be made up within two-days upon student’s return, unless other arrangements are made between the student and myself.

I do not allow retakes on tests and quizzes. Study and do your best!

Student Expectations: The key to learning any language is practice and as much exposure to the language that you are learning.  Your participation in class and all the activities that we do are essential to your learning. Make an effort in pronunciation, always speak the target language, always have your homework on time, pay attention in class and participate with your classmates with a positive attitude. Remember, each one of you has a contribution to make to the class. I expect each student to show respect for everyone’s individuality as you learn together and I expected from all of you to speak only in Spanish throughout the class.

ABSENCES/TARDIES/MAKE-UP WORK/LATE WORK: In the event of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed and to hand it in promptly. Follow these steps:

  • BEFORE you return to class:  Find the missed assignment on the class webpage or by contacting your classroom contacts and check what action was taken with that homework.

Remember, Class participation assignments (e.g., speaking and group activities) cannot be made up because they cannot be recreated out of class. Work missed due to unexcused absences may not be made up. Work due to suspension cannot be made up, unless it is a chapter test or other large project.  If you miss a quiz or smaller presentation, and your absence is unexcused, there is no make-up

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET YOUR MAKE-UP WORK AND TO TURN IT IN ON TIME, WHETHER YOU WERE SICK OR GONE FOR SPORTS OR OTHER SCHOOL EVENTS!!!!  BOOKMARK THE WEB PAGES & GET SOME CLASSMATES’ PHONE NUMBERS!!! MAKE USE OF MY OFFICE HOURS!!

¡¡SÉ RESPONSIBLE!!

Classroom Rules: Think “Lancer Pride

Perseverance Respect Integrity Discipline Excellence

  1. RESPETO: be respectful to everyone and the learning environment
  2. Be on time and prepared
  3. Participate with a positive attitude
  4. Obey school policies (see student handbook)
  5. Speak Spanish

Integrity: Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Please see the student handbook for more information.  Some examples include but are not limited to: giving or receiving answers on any assignments (including homework), plagiarism, using an online or electronic translator, and/ or using outside materials not permitted by the teacher on tests or quizzes.  Please also note that I have a no talking policy during quizzes and tests, regardless of whether a student has or has not turned in the exam. No students should be talking amongst themselves; if there are any questions, they should be directed to me. Talking during a quiz/ test may result in a zero for all parties involved.

Electronic Devices (cell phones, IPods, etc) are distractions to the effective learning of Spanish, and are not permitted in class unless I give you explicit permission.  Any electronic device must be turned off and stored in student’s backpacks. If you use your cell phone, IPods, etc. in class you will receive one warning, after that I write a referral and the matter will be resolved with an administrator.

Discipline: I expect students to have both self-discipline and a mature attitude. Students who fail to follow school and classroom rules take away from the instruction of other students. Behaviors that wastes vital classroom time is unacceptable, therefore, pay attention and be sure to act appropriately!! Refer to your student handbook for rules and consequences. In cases where I need to intervene, I will first talk to you (the student) about the problem.  If the problem persists, then I will either call or write home to your parent/guardian, or refer the matter to an administrator. It is to be understood by the student that, once I discipline him/her for a specific behavior (whether it’s a short discussion individually with you or if I discuss the issue with your parent or an administrator) I do NOT expect to have to deal with that same behavior again!! Parents, please call or e-mail me with any concerns or questions you may have.

Dismissal: Remain in your seats at the end of class until I dismiss you. We normally work up to the bell, so don’t put your materials away early!!
