Mid-term grades (Math)

Posted under Math

I want to remind families that math is proficiency-based grading and give more information about how it works.  A 4 is highly proficient (“I can teach it”), a 3 is proficient (“I understand it”), a 2 is nearly proficient (“I almost get it”), a 1 is not proficient (“I don’t understand it”) and a 0 or IE is no evidence (nothing turned in, blank, did not take the quiz or test).  Getting a 3 on each standard is a year-long goal.  CPM curriculum is a “spiral” curriculum, meaning it introduces a concept briefly and then comes back to it and builds on it several times throughout the year.  In this format, it is unlikely that students will be at a 3 the first time they are introduced especially in the beginning of the year.  I also do not yet have the data to know if your child is highly proficient (4).

In addition, please take the time to look at the proficiency level for each standard so you can see your child’s growth throughout the year.  I do not have ParentVue or StudentVue but there is a tab for “Standards” and that will give you the most up-to-date information on their progress.

Thanks!   Please contact me  (email preferred) if you have any further questions or concerns.

Make Up Work

Posted under Math & Science

Policy for make up work:

If you were absent, you MUST make up the work within a week or it will be counted as “late”.  Check the door of my classroom and this website for office hours.  You must plan ahead because when you are available may not be when I am available.  When you complete the work, please write “absent” on the top of the assignment or homework and it will not count against you.  You must also mark the page with a sticky note and turn it into the appropriate basket.  Otherwise I will not see what I need to grade.

If you do not complete the classwork in class, take it home and complete it.

If you see a comment and need to fix something in your graded notebook (writing legibly, answering the entire question, answering a skipped question), then fix it, place a sticky note on the page you fixed and turn it into the appropriate basket.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  Have a good day!

Math – Paper Bag Donations

Posted under Math

I hope you’re having a good weekend!   On Tuesday (9/20) we will be covering our math books this year to help protect them from wear and tear and are in need of paper grocery bags to do that with.  If you have paper grocery bags that you are willing to donate, please send them with your student or drop them by the office for Ms. Lum.  Thanks!

Math – Pre-assessment Today

Posted under Math

Today I will be giving out a pre-assessment so I can see how well they have mastered the 5th grade Common Core standards.  This will NOT be a part of their math proficiency level in any way.  Students will be given some feedback about how they did so that they can strengthen the areas where there may be deficits as well as enhance areas where there are strengths.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!
