Make Up Work

Posted under Math & Science

Policy for make up work:

If you were absent, you MUST make up the work within a week or it will be counted as “late”.  Check the door of my classroom and this website for office hours.  You must plan ahead because when you are available may not be when I am available.  When you complete the work, please write “absent” on the top of the assignment or homework and it will not count against you.  You must also mark the page with a sticky note and turn it into the appropriate basket.  Otherwise I will not see what I need to grade.

If you do not complete the classwork in class, take it home and complete it.

If you see a comment and need to fix something in your graded notebook (writing legibly, answering the entire question, answering a skipped question), then fix it, place a sticky note on the page you fixed and turn it into the appropriate basket.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  Have a good day!

Math – Paper Bag Donations

Posted under Math

I hope you’re having a good weekend!   On Tuesday (9/20) we will be covering our math books this year to help protect them from wear and tear and are in need of paper grocery bags to do that with.  If you have paper grocery bags that you are willing to donate, please send them with your student or drop them by the office for Ms. Lum.  Thanks!

Science Grades

Posted under Science

Dear Families,

I hope you had a good weekend!   I wanted to let students and their families know that I have updated synergy (aka ParentVue and StudentVue) to reflect what students have completed in class.  Please do not be too alarmed if when you check the grade is not what you expected.  There are four assignments students should have completed up to this point: A signed letter home, a signed safety letter, a self-portrait and a response to a reading in their student edition books.   There are a few reasons a grade may be low: 1) The signed letters were either not turned in or both letters were not fully signed by both child and parent/guardian.  If the latter I will return them on Monday.  2) No name – I can’t give credit if I do not know who to give credit to. There is a basket in my room with all no name work. 3) Did not turn in their student editions (SE) for grading (marked as missing) or the responses for HW Reading 1.1 was incomplete (marked as a 0).  Please check StudentVue (students should know their usernames and passwords because it is the same used to log onto the school’s internet) and find out what, if anything, is missing or incomplete and turn it in as soon as possible.  Thank you and have a good Sunday!

Math – Pre-assessment Today

Posted under Math

Today I will be giving out a pre-assessment so I can see how well they have mastered the 5th grade Common Core standards.  This will NOT be a part of their math proficiency level in any way.  Students will be given some feedback about how they did so that they can strengthen the areas where there may be deficits as well as enhance areas where there are strengths.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

9/12-9/17

Posted under Uncategorized

Welcome to the first full week of school!  Here’s a little update in case you’re wondering what you need to bring

Science: Everyday you will need to bring at least two pencils and an eraser, your agenda planner and binder with a science section.  The student edition (SE) for science will be passed out early next week (probably Tuesday 9/13).  You are expected to bring the SEs to class everyday and will need to bring it home about two to three times a week to complete homework.

Math: Everyday you will need to bring at least two pencils, an eraser, a ruler, a calculator, a blank notebook for classwork and homework, your agenda planner and binder with a math section, and math textbook (which I will distribute probably Wed 9/14).  There will be an interactive notebook (INB) that will be provided and this should also be brought to class everyday.  You will need to take your INB, textbook, and math notebook home everyday for homework.   Next week I will have students sign up for the e-book version of the textbook so they can access it online.
