Welcome to 3rd Grade!!

Technology

This year, all 2nd and 3rd grade teachers at Howard have been truly immersed in implementing a 1:1 iPad program into our classrooms.  We began last year, but have made some huge strides with the devices this year.  I wanted to share some great apps that we are using, so if you have a device at home, you can have your child do some practice at home!!  If you don’t, at least you will know just some of the practice opportunities that students have each and every day!

Splash Math is a great site for students to practice any and all math skills.  Currently, students have all 3 levels of Splash Math; 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades.  Currently, students are doing multiplication factor practice.  As we are working on learning the various factors, students add the factors to their practice page and see how many facts they can master within a minute. (This is a paid app.  The lite version is free, and limits students to only 20 problems a day.  The paid version is $9.99)

Quick Math is a another great app to have students work on fact practice. The nice thing about this app is that students are given the problem, and have to respond by writing the answer down on the screen instead of simply pushing a button. (This app is $1.99. I got it free for students on apps gone free.)

Dice is a great free app with many opportunities for use in math.  I have students use the dice app to create multi digit addition and subtraction problems.  They choose any number of dice between 1 and 20.  They can choose any order that the numbers go into and work from there.

Geoboard is another nice free app for kids to practice building shapes.  It is an updated tech version of the old rubberband and nail geoboard.  We use this app to build shapes and talk about how they compare to other shapes based on their sides and corners.
