Period 4 Social Studies, Periods 5 and 6 Language Arts

Social Studies and Language Arts for Spanish Immersion
Seventh grade literacy block students and teachers will work in the curricular areas of language arts, social studies, and literature. During this block period of instruction, an effort will be made to integrate one or more subject areas where the goals and objectives of each are compatible.

Language Arts
The primary goal of language arts is the development of effective communication which includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. As students experiment with a variety of communication skills, they make choices to develop their own voice. Instruction is in the following areas:
Writing Composition (process, writing modes and traits)
State Writing Assessment will take place at 7th grade
Reading
Vocabulary Development
Poetry
Listening
Speaking
Humor

Literature
Students will read novels and other selected material, which reflect and communicate a wide spectrum of human experiences. The main goals are to understand and interpret the readings using literary skills and to provide opportunities for students to apply and expand thinking, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills.

Social Studies
This area of instruction is divided into a number of sections. First, we will start with an overview of how the United States government works. The majority of the year is devoted to world history, which covers the Roman Empire to the Renaissance.

Along with the above curriculum, students will be involved in individual and group projects, reports, and dramatic presentations.
