As we approach the holidays, please make sure to let Bernadette and both teachers know if your child will be missing any regular school days. It helps us with our planning to know, so please email us all! A big MERCI to those parents who have already let us know.

Kindness Month

To help build a caring classroom and school community, we have been enjoying great discussions and times of caring actions around the theme of “kindness.” Last week, students said, “Thank you,” to our custodian and kitchen staff. They made book marks for 1st graders and life skills students and looked for ways to be kind to classmates.

Le français:

Mme Jana, French & Science kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu

•We speak only French in the French classroom.

•We conjugate verbs correctly and use them correctly in sentences.

•We have a positive attitude and growth mindset.

In cursive this past week, we continued with uppercase letters (les majuscules) with the letters T, F, I and J. All we have left are D, L, G, S, E, and Q! We also continue with the French typing program, Tap’Touche.

The “Moi!” projects went home on Friday. A few students did not complete the project, so f your child didn’t come home with one, that means that he/she didn’t complete it. The “Tubes” project will go home this week. Everyone has begun the new stained glass project, and some have even begun their final copy.

I gave a quiz which consists of two “horrible” sentences, exactly like the sentences we do together every day in class. The kids were allowed to use a translating dictionary and a Bescherelle conjugating dictionary. Unfortunately, most students did not do very well on this quiz. I am a bit disappointed because we’ve been practicing for months. It tells me that we need to spend more time on some topics I thought they understood. We will do so! In any case, don’t be upset with your child if he/she didn’t do well.

In January, third through fifth grades will be doing a practice STAMP French proficiency assessment. STAMP is the assessment that students normally do in 3rd, 5th, 8th & 10th in language immersion. Since this group didn’t get to do the assessment in third grade, this will help them be familiar with the one that “counts” next year. It will take us about two weeks to complete. It will help us assess where students are after our year and a half of Covid restrictions. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening will be assessed.

Les sciences:

We will do an assessment next week to finish up the science unit. In January, we’ll begin Energy (l’Énergie).

Math: Fractions

•We can model unit fractions, mixed numbers and non-unit fractions in more than one way.

•We can construct a whole if we know a fractional part.

•We can decompose fractions into unit fractions and non-unit fractions.

In class:

We continue Unit 4: Decomposing & Composing Fractions. This week we will use fraction bar models and number lines to model addition and subtraction of fractions. In addition, we’ll play some games and use fraction pieces to explore and build on the concept of fractions.

Math Homework: None this week.

English Writing

•We will finish a draft a 5+ paragraph essay.

•We will edit, revise and write a final draft of our essay.

Last week, students outlined and began an organized essay about their research about a tribe of indigenous people from the Oregon region. Using the writing process of planning, drafting, revising and editing, students will complete a final draft (hopefully this week) to bring home to share with you.

For word study this week, students will analyze commonly confused homophones such as their/there/ they’re, its/ it’s and others.
