Le français:

Mme Jana, French & Science kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu

•We speak only French in the French classroom.

•We conjugate verbs correctly and use them correctly in sentences.

•We have a positive attitude and growth mindset.

In cursive this past week, we continued with uppercase letters (les majuscules) with the letters H & K. This week, we’ll do T, F, I and J, aka “the hard ones!” We will continue to work on first and last names in cursive. We also continue with the French typing program, Tap’Touche.

I didn’t have the help I expected this week, so the “Moi” projects did not get taken down, so they will go home at the end of this coming week! The “Tubes” project will also go home before winter break. Nearly everyone has begun the new stained glass project.

We conjugated the verb être (to be) and reviewed the verb avoir (to have). We also began a new “J’observe…” writing project. It’s called “Une tornade de poissons” or “A Tornado of Fish.” See left. The students always really like this photo. We discussed it and wrote the introductory sentence, and we’ll follow up on Tuesday with the rest.

Les sciences:

We finished up our last science experiment with this unit, but still have a few things to cover before an assessment.  In January, we’ll begin a new science unit, Energy! Blue class has not yet finished their foldable to help understand erosion and deposition more deeply; we will finish it up on Tuesday.

New Math unit!

•We can model unit fractions, mixed numbers and non-unit fractions in more than one way.

•We can construct a whole if we know a fractional part.

•We can decompose fractions into unit fractions and non-unit fractions.

In class:

Goals of our new unit, Unit 4: Decomposing & Composing Fractions, are drawn from Fourth Grade Fraction standards (4.NF.B.3). We start by exploring fraction models and hands-on fraction pieces to review and build understanding of fractions. The concept of unit fraction (a fraction with 1 in the numerator) is introduced as students compose fractions with models including number lines and bar models and circle models.

Math Homework: Practice pages to review fraction models will come home each night this week.

English & Social Studies

•We will use our research notes to plan and outline an essay.

•We will draft a 5+ paragraph essay and will begin to edit for word choice, punctuation, spelling and capitalization.

Last week, students collected information about one of Oregon’s original people groups. This week, they will begin to plan and write an essay about their research. Using the writing process of planning, drafting, revising and editing, students will complete a final draft hopefully before winter break to bring home to share with you. Also, This week students will learn about indigenous languages and other topics from Oregon Department of Educations Tribal History lessons.

For word study this week, students will analyze words identifying their vowel sounds and letter combinations of ou, aw, au, and ow.
