Students may bring quiet bus activities such as books or notebooks & pencils. In keeping with our school technology policy, students may not bring any technological devices, watches, phones, cameras, Kindles, etc. If you have questions about this policy, please contact Mme Courtney or Shelli. We have posted technology guidelines from our school handbook at the bottom of this post. We have enough chaperones at this time.

Mme Jana’s News  (kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu)

FLA (French Language Arts): Last week, we again had reading groups twice, and we again spent most of the week working on the Francophone country project. We went over the corrected sentences and those should have come home.

Les sciences humaines (Social studies): The kids continue to be very excited about their Francophone country projects. Here are the research materials for the project and a list of which students have which countries :  Liste projet pays francophone 2019 order alph, francophone projet. Again, if you look under “Les ressources de Mme Jana” at the top of the blog, you’ll see the “Géographie” section, and you can browse some of the sites we will explore. Most students have finished side 4 of the dodecahedron, the flag (le drapeau), and side 9, the government leader(s) (les têtes du gouvernement). Many have completed side 1, a map of the country, showing any countries and/or bodies of water that border it, its capital and its currency (l’identité du pays). Several students have either completed or are working on side 3, which is climate (le climat). Next, most kids are very excited to work on the flora and fauna (la flore et la faune) of their country, side 5. That said, many students have already completed five of their 12 sides. We’ll try to get two more sides completed this week. Next are side 7, the official languages (la langue officielle) of the country and side 8, the geography (la géographie) of the country.

Mme Shelli (hopper_s@4j.lane.edu)

Kacie, our student teacher, continues teaching this week.  She is designing a reading unit from our Journeys curriculum.  This week, as a continuation of our discussion of Women’s suffrage, students will learn about how our government is organized.  Later in the week, students will be doing some non-fiction reading about ecosystems.
In writing, students are beginning to edit and revise their persuasive essays.  They have written a 4-5 paragraph argument about a topic that interests them with an introductory paragraph, 2-3 paragraphs with supported, logical reasoning, and a conclusion.  Later in the week, students will use teacher and peer feedback to revise their essays.
Math: Students will wrap up a unit on modeling multiplication of fractions on Tuesday.  Kacie will take the lead in teaching with me assisting.  Students will not just learn to multiply numerators and denominators, but will be modeling what is happening as they multiply. Next, students will be doing a fun geometry unit.

TECHNOLOGY GUIDELINES Recently in the upper grades we’ve seen some improper use of technology and a cell phone theft. Please check out this updated handbook information below.

While we recognize the ubiquitous nature of technology in students’ lives and use it as a teaching tool, we respectfully require students to leave their personal technology at home to create a more calm and focused learning environment.

Video games, laser pens, iPods, tablets, e-readers, and other items are not allowed at school as they create unnecessary distractions.  Electronic devices such as cell phones or smart watches must remain off and away in backpacks during the school day, from drop-off to pick-up.  Administrators may temporarily confiscate an electronic device that is used inappropriately.

Electronic devices are also not allowed on school trips, including the 5th grade trip to Canoe Island or any regularly scheduled field trips.  Supervising adults have full access to their electronic devices in case of emergency.

If students have difficulty following these guidelines, we follow our regular school procedures for consequences, seeking always to educate students about proper technology use.
