Mme Jana’s News  (kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu)

I was out sick two days last week with a delightful cold, and I was only able to find a French-speaking sub one day, so we have a little catch-up work to do this week.

FLA (French Language Arts): Last week, we did some work on our latest “J’observe” and we had reading groups once. We spent time talking about our new social studies project and choosing which student will be studying which francophone country. The students also did a new sentence correction quiz. We will go over those and over the last dictation, but I’m still formulating the new dictée. I hope students will finish up the last “J’observe” and we’ll be able to begin a new one next week.

Les sciences:  Since I was sick, I haven’t made progress on new sciences, so we’ll begin our final unit, L’environnement (Environments) next week.

Les sciences humaines (Social studies): Each student has his or her francophone country, and we’ll begin researching them on Monday. I have finalized all the research materials for the project, so copies of them as well as a list of which students have which countries are here:  Liste projet pays francophone 2019 order alph, francophone projet. This is a project we will do at school. If you look under “Les ressources de Mme Jana” at the top of the blog, you’ll see the “Geographie” section, and you can browse some of the sites we will explore. We’ll begin by figuring out where our countries are in the world and what countries border them.

English Language Arts:

Students will wrap up their pioneer novel studies and historical fiction journals on Monday.  Tuesday, Kacie, our student teacher will begin a reading unit from our Journeys curriculum while I begin a unit on persuasive writing.  I will have Kacie update the blog soon with information about her unit. Persuasive writing is always a fun unit for 4th graders!

Math:  Our angles unit wraps up on Monday.  We have to postpone the second part of our geometry unit until the beginning of May because the workbooks are back ordered from the print shop.  Instead, we’ll go on to a crucial fractions unit of multiplying fractions.  Kacie will take the lead in teaching with me assisting.  Students will not just learn to multiply numerators and denominators, but will be modeling what is happening as they multiply. Here are a few samples of problems students will solve and explain.  Modeling Multiplication  Table Problem
