Homework:

Mme Shelli’s Class: If your child didn’t share their Oregon Geography & Native American history booklet with you this week, please set aside 5-10 minutes for your child to share.  Sign the yellow parent page & return it, but you make keep their hard work. There is no other homework this week.

Mme Jana’s Class: The last French homework of 2018 is this week. We will be looking at days of the week and at seasons in French. In January, we’ll work on months.  We will hand out homework Monday, and in case it gets misplaced, here it is: jours de la semaine 2018 Vocab

Important Dates:

December 22- January 7 NO SCHOOL, Winter Break

Tuesday, January 8   First day back for students

Mme Jana’s News  (kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu)

I will attempt to return to full-time teaching this week, although I will be out on December 18 of next week for a follow-up appointment.

FLA (French Language Arts):  The next verbs we will conjugate are pouvoir (to be able) and vouloir (to want). We’ll then tackle venir (to come) and tenir (to hold). I believe Victor and Patricia began a new “J’observe…” last week called “La baleine” that has a surfer and a large whale, so we’ll follow up on that and possibly begin a new one.

We will continue reading groups this week and next. One group has begun a non-fiction book as an experiment. Other groups will also do non-fiction books in January.

Les sciences:  We’ll begin a new science unit in January, “La terre, les pierres et les formes du relief” (Soils, rocks and landforms.)

English Language Arts:  Students will wrap up their novel study on either Sing Down the Moon or Soft Rain this week.  These historical fiction novels feature Native American characters who experience being forcibly sent to a reservation during the 1800s.  Ask your child about the novel they are reading.

In English writing, students will be writing creatively using some winter prompts.  The goal of this mini-unit before winter break, is to have students write organized fictional narratives with creative word choice and accurate conventions (spelling & punctuation).

Math: We will finish our unit: Decomposing & Composing Fractions (Addition & Subtraction). The goal is for students to understand fractions beyond just adding numerators. Instead students should  be able to explain and model fractions and mixed numbers as they break them apart and put them together in a variety of real world situations.   We will be demonstrating our thinking with fraction bar models, number lines, and using money.

Absences:

Several families have let us know they will be out of town the week before Winter Break. If you fall into this category, let both of us and Bernadette know about your plans so it’s officially in the system.  Please do this any time your child won’t be in class more than two days. It helps us tremendously with planning. Merci! Here is a link to a form you should submit to the office for extended absences of greater than 2 days.
