Mme Jana’s News (kincaid_j@4j.lane.edu)

I am out very sick, so this is last week’s post. I will update next week, and I’m sending an email to all parents about my situation.

FLA (French Language Arts):  We are working hard on how to conjugate verbs within sentences, not as easy as it may seem. We’ll do another exercise this week, and basically keep working on it all year ’til it’s hopefully second nature. We worked on a worksheet I designed which helps students practice finding the right subject and conjugating the verb correctly.

Most students have completed their first reading group book and set of comprehension questions. You should see those packets coming home soon, and we’ll begin new books next week.

Av handful of students have completed their Problèmes de logique 1 packet and are ready to move on to the second one…once they arrive from the printer. This packet is worked on when all other work has been completed.

Most students are completing their last cursive packet or are on the corrections stage. We also wrote our names again on a practice sheet so we can compare the beginning of the year with the end. Big change already for everyone.

English Language Arts:  Students will be writing & completing their reports about a Native American tribe from Oregon this week.  They also will be preparing a short speech to present at our “Museum Day” on December 5th. Parents are welcome to attend. At home, students should be creating a visual (diorama, poster, painting, illustrated book) to accompany theirreport.  This visual is due December 3rd.

We will be welcoming Brenda Brainard from the Eugene NATIVES program this Tuesday.  She will bring a large collection of artifacts from the first people of Oregon to share with the class.  It should be an exciting week.

Math: Students’ Multiplication and Division Strategies with larger numbers booklets & assessments will come home to you on Monday.  Please read, sign & return the parent letter.

We will begin our next unit: Decomposing & Composing Fractions (Addition & Subtraction). The goal is for students to understand fraction beyond just adding numerators. Instead students should  be able to explain and model fractions and mixed numbers as they break them apart and put them together in a variety of real world situations.   We will be demonstrating our thinking with fraction bar models, number lines, and using money.

Dreambox math is an optional home activity for individualized, leveled math practice and is paid for by the school district. On a computer, students can login with their school passwords using “login with active directory.” If your child has an IPAD at home, email Shelli for instructions on how to log on. Studies show that students who use Dreambox 60+ minutes per week in addition to regular classroom instruction make great gains in their math understanding.

Thank you parents for attending parent-teacher conferences!  Please take time to look at Seesaw updates as they come to you to see/hear how your child is progressing in class. If you have further questions about your child’s growth in 4th grade, remember that we are available by email or to meet by appointment.

Absences:

Several families have let us know they will be out of town the week before Winter Break. If you fall into this category, let both of us and Bernadette know about your plans so it’s officially in the system.  Please do this any time your child won’t be in class. It helps us tremendously with planning. Merci! Here is a link to a form you should submit to the office for extended absences of greater than 2 days.
