Mme Jana’s News This week,

In a separate email, once I finish it!, I’ll be sending lots of links to academic activities to explore over the summer. I strongly encourage your child to keep up his French over the summer. Look above in the Mme Jana “ressources” to find a large number of free French websites to explore.

FLA (French Language Arts):  This past week, most students completed all three French language assessments: reading fluency, a writing assessment with no reference materials, and a comprehension assessment. Everyone is reading, writing and speaking significantly better than at the beginning of the year. In fact, statistically, fall reading fluency was, on average, 59 cwpm (correct words per minute), and this spring, your children’s reading fluency shot up to 143 cwpm. That is a 142% improvement! Also, on average, students moved up 1.6 writing categories from the fall to the spring. Your child’s personal statistics will be reported to you on the report card. Please take the time to look through the significant amount of writing your child did in his French journal when it comes home at the end of the year. Students completed a survey of which “J’observe…” writing assignments were finished. That paper will come home, possibly in the report card, and it will indicate which of the 21 in-journal writing exercises your child completed.

Les sciences humaines:  Five students (both classes included) have completed their francophone country dodecahedron, and one has actually already given his report. (These students will be working on a geometry art project.) Most students will finish their projects and present their countries this week. If your child hasn’t completed his research and begun his dodecahedron by this point, it is likely that he will not complete it, but I will send home materials so it can be completed at home.

Mme Shelli’s News

Language Arts & Health : As part of our human body study, we have a few medical professionals coming to share about their work.  Students will be learning about various body systems & how to keep themselves healthy during reading & writing time over the next few weeks.  Students will learn a little about their respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and skeletal systems. The reproductive system will not be covered in 4th grade- just wait until next year!  The unit includes some reading & research as well as some brief scientific inquiry.  It is a fun way to end the year.

Math: In Math, we will take a test on multiplying fractions by whole numbers.   Learn more about this unit at this link.Look for tests to come home by the end of the week.  After this, we’ll be doing a graphing and data unit which should be a fun way to end the year.

Summer Math

Over the summer, I encourage students to spend a little time on  math practice.  There are many ways to practice and extend math & reading at home.  One interesting and FREE summer program is called Summer Math Challenge which sends you 6 weeks of math challenges for your child for via email.  Another FREE practice option is to have your child do play math games on DreamBox or SumDog (see math link above) – I will leave your child’s profile active over the summer.
