Mme Jana’s News

FLA (French Language Arts): We began a new “J’observe…” this week, of a row of bee-eaters (beautiful birds) on a branch. When you first look at it, it resembles a caterpillar. It is a favorite for a lot of kids.

Fifth grade wants to wait until after spring break to get together for our groups, so we’ll keep using Fridays for vocabulary quizzes, dictées and practicing our Reader’s Theatre.

Speaking of dictations (les dictées), we’ll do a new one cold on Monday, then Tuesday or Wednesday, we’ll write the whole thing out together in our journals with full explanations, then on Thursday, we’ll do that same dictée again. We’re building on the same story, the third paragraph this week.

Sciences: We continue to work in our new unit, La terre, les pierres, et les formes du relief, aka Soils, Rocks and Landforms. Last week, on Monday, we got to see what kind of products were in the dishes as a result of chemical weathering. We got to draw and talk about chemical reactions and crystals and calcite! This week we’ll examine our school soils.

Mme Shelli’s News

ELA:  In reading/social studies, we will finish a chapter book called Lewis & Clark, in Their Own Words by George Sullivan.  We will watch a short video told from the Native American perspective.  This will make an interesting connection to our April unit on the Oregon Trail. To wrap up our Lewis & Clark unit, students will be doing a writing “Performance Task.”  This is a chance for students to use information gathered in our research to create a fictional narrative from the point of view of someone who lived during the expedition.  This type of performance task is similar to the English language arts performance task on state testing which is scheduled for May.

Math: Monday, students will review continue multiplicative comparison and measurement and will take a short quiz showing their understanding of the topic.  Then, until Spring Break, we’ll be doing a fun, hands-on geometry unit measuring angles.  You can learn more about this unit at this link.
