Homework:

Mme Shelli’s Class: Students have nightly spelling homework this week.  Our word study this week is to look at how base words change as suffix endings are added.  For additional math practice, students can access either DreamBox or SumDog from my website under the “Math” link. I have set up assignments in each platform based on the measurement unit we are currently studying, so please encourage your child to log on from home, if you can.

Mme Jana’s Class:  We have no French vocabulary homework this week, but students who missed answers on the vocabulary quiz will write the misspelled words correctly, and we will continue to work with those words at school.

Important Dates:

Thursday & Friday, March 15 & 16         Science Fair!

March 31- April 2      Spring Break- No School

Mme Jana’s News

If you can believe it, we only have four full weeks before spring break!!!

FLA (French Language Arts): Nearly everyone has finished catching up on their “J’observe…” writing, so we’ll begin a new one this week.

We’ll also work on the (Readers Theatre) Lecture théâtrale and do some in-class practice performances. We will have our normal  4th grade/5th grade combo day on Friday. We will have either three or four groups this time, and my group will be working on French sounds & vocabulary.

We’ve been following up on Mme Shelli’s time telling unit by learning how to express time in French, and we’ll keep at it for another week or so.

We’re also working on giving compliments (in French), so please keep talking to your kids about being kind to one another and give them examples about how to give a sincere compliment.

Sciences: We continue to work in our new unit, La terre, les pierres, et les formes du relief, aka Soils, Rocks and Landforms. We worked more on physical weathering and understanding what it is last week, so we’ll move on to chemical weathering this week. I thought we’d get to it last week, but OBOB made it impossible.

Mme Shelli’s News

ELA:  This week we begin reading a chapter book biography based on the journals of Lewis & Clark.  Students will be using their skills in analyzing non-fiction text as they learn about a significant time in U.S. history.  Along the way, students will also be reading fictional reader’s theater and writing fictional narratives based on this time period.  This unit will continue for the next 3 weeks.

Math:

We finished the unit “Introduction to Measurement Conversions” last week. Students will bring home their unit quizzes on Monday or Tuesday. Please spend a moment going over the test with your child.  If your child did not fully understand measurement conversions, they will have more opportunities in class this week, However, if your child struggled on the test (65% or less), I will also send home additional practice for home.

The next math unit continues with measurement conversion using multiplication.  Learn more about Unit 7 “Solving Problems with Multiplicative Comparison” at this link.  Students will be using models and equations to represent a variety of problem types that have different unknowns (product, group size, and number of groups). Making sense of the quantities involved will reveal that they are all related to each other by “multiplicative comparison.” Students will then use their knowledge of place value to round numbers and estimate answers in comparison problems as a way to check their thinking with a different method. Finally, students will use their knowledge of conversions to create equivalent measures so that quantities can be compared.
