You can find out more about Mme Kimberly at the bottom of this post.  If you have any questions, please contact Mme Shelli.

Mme Jana’s News

FLA (French Language Arts): We have so many things going on in FLA! To begin with, the students will be getting reassessed this week for their reading fluency in French. This is the second of their three French reading fluency assessments. They will also have a writing assessment, again the second of three.

Since all roles have been assigned for our four plays, we will begin practicing our lines for Reader’s Theater (La lecture théâtrale). I reserve the right to change roles around if any students aren’t practicing their parts seriously and assiduously; they may be shifted to a lesser role. Hopefully we’ll get good enough to invite other students and parents in to see our performances!

We’ll begin reading our non-fiction texts in French this week, and of course, we’ll continue working on writing, leading up to our three-paragraph writing project next term.

Students have begun learning some tongue-twisters, which we’ll continue to practice. Each student is required to memorize two of them to recite in front of the class!

We’re also leading up to a geography unit on map-reading and topographical map-reading, which should go nicely with our upcoming sciences unit!

Sciences: This week or next, we’ll begin a new unit, La terre, les pierres, et les formes du relief, aka Soils, Rocks and Landforms. The kits arrived sooner than expected, and we have to get ourselves sorted out and geared up!

Mme Shelli’s News

ELA: Last week we read a radio play & discussed the history of radio.  This week’s texts focus on movie making.  Students will read several non-fiction articles about special effects and tricks that movie makers use to communicate. Students will become critics as they evaluate a few short movie clips looking for some of the special effects they read about in the movies.  You can read along with our story and see the clips I’ll be showing in class in Lesson 7 of Journeys in the red tab above.

Math: Students will bring home their last math booklet for Unit 2 Multiplication & Division Strategies this week.  We begin Unit 5: Equivalence & Ordering of Fractions this week.  Check out more at this link.

A Note from Mme Kimberly, student teacher

Dear Parents,

My name is Kimberly, and I will be student teaching in your child’s class with Madame Shelli this winter. Following my student teaching, I will graduate from the University of Oregon with a masters degree in elementary education.

I was born and raised in Eugene and while I myself did not attend Charlemagne, both of my little brothers were lucky enough to go here! My husband and I have 3 children, a dog named Shasta, a cat named Stella, and a fish named Secret.

We love to hike, camp, garden, cook, go to Duck games, and travel. My favorite place to travel to is Italy. I started my teaching career while I was living in Siena, Italy and knew from that point on, that teaching and working with kids is what I would do for the rest of my life.

This winter is going to be so much fun and I’m very excited to be teaching in the fourth grade classroom. I’ve spent this past week observing in the classroom and getting to know your child. I look forward to sharing some fun lessons this term!

Sincerely, Kimberly DeGifis

Other school news

Outdoor recess:

Principal Eric asks us to give you a friendly reminder that the district expects students to be outside unless there are extreme weather conditions. Therefore, please remember to appropriately dress your child for rainy outdoor recesses. We are seeing very few raincoats, which are important to keep kids’ clothing dry so they don’t have to sit sopping wet in class. Thanks for your attention to this matter!

Internet Safety and Kids Presentation, Tuesday, Jan. 16, 6:30-8pm

Ophelia’s Place will be here to talk with parents about what kids are doing online and how to themselves safe.  This presentation is for all current and prospective parents at Charlemagne and is sponsored by the PTO.

The meeting is in the lunchroom, and childcare is provided in the gym.

We would love to be able to cover all topics but if you complete this survey we will do our best to cover the most requested topics https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/35WRSPV

This will be highly informative! Hope to see you there! Thanks, Mme Dale, School Counselor

After School Safety:

In effort to keep everyone safe & to get students on their way in a timely manner after school: For safety, please do not have your child walk alone between cars to your parked vehicle.  Instead, if you park, please come to our carpool area to pick up your child, and we also know that a responsible adult is taking your child.  To keep traffic moving, please pull all of the way forward in the carpool lane.  If your child is not readily available at the carpool pick up zone, pull forward or park.  For safety, children on the playground must have an adult supervision or they should remain with teachers at our pick up spot under the tree. If you have specialized after school instructions for your child, please notify us and the office in writing. Thank you.
