Mme Shelli’s News

ELA: In reading, we will read an excerpt from War of the Worlds by Orson Wells in our Journeys textbook. Follow link here to Lesson 6 to read this week’s story. Students will focus on supporting their thinking about the text using evidence from the text.  This means that when a student discusses a portion of the text, the student should write or say something like, “I think … because the text says….” This is part of the first 4th grade reading standard that requires 4th graders to be able to explain what text says and to draw inferences citing specific text evidence.

Also during reading, students will continue to read self-selected texts.  At the end of this week, they will summarize in a letter to me what they are reading independently.

Math: Early in the week, we will wrap up Unit 2 Multiplication & Division Strategies in which students solve for area & perimeter using multiplication and division strategies.  Even though students will take the unit test on Tuesday, they will continue to see multiplication and division in future homework which is mostly made of review from concepts learned in class.

Later this week, we’ll begin Unit 5- Understanding fraction equivalence and comparison. In this unit, students will discover strategies for comparing and building equivalent fractions, and they will be ordering and comparing fractions with like & unlike denominators. They will solve real world problems and communicate their thinking about fractions using models such as number lines and illustrating circle or bar fractions.  For more about this unit go to LearnZillion.

Dreambox/ Sum Dog for additional math practice

If you have time, encourage your child to do a little extra math online using their DreamBox or SumDog subscriptions.  I encourage at least 60 minutes per week outside of school time either doing an online program, doing other math activiites, or practicing multiplication/ division facts, if needed.
