Homework:

Mme Shelli’s Class: English spelling/wordstudy is homework.  Students practice words missed on a pretest and sort words by spelling patterns.  This helps kids to see patterns in vowel spellings, not just to memorize words.  For kids who have mastered basic words, challenge words on lists give students opportunities to see patterns in more complex words.  One page or more should be completed each night.

Mme Jana’s Class:  This week, only students who missed words from this past week’s quiz have homework, and those are the words they missed. There is some work each day. The sheets have been made individually, so it’s important that students keep track of their papers.

Mme Jana’s News

FLA (French Language Arts): All the Moi! projects are now complete and hanging in the 4th grade stairwell and hallway, so please take a look at your child’s. They’ll go home at parent/teacher conferences.

We are still working away on French reading groups. A few groups will be ready to change to a new book after this week. Spoken French is definitely improving as I see the kids making themselves speak French, and they’re getting reading and writing practice every day as well. We’ll start conjugating the four irregular verbs (avoir – to have, être – to be, faire – to make or do, and aller – to go) this coming week as well.

A few students still need to finish up their cursive, so we’ll begin Tap’Touche next week also!

Sciences: We tested insulators and conductors, and today, the kids made testers and went around the classroom identifying various conductors and insulators. Next week, we’ll begin series and parallel circuits. I think most kids understand the difference between an open and a closed circuit now.

Mme Shelli’s News

ELA: Students completed a big project which was to read 3 or more Native American myths and to journal about them.  Students were able to select stories and report on them by summarizing, analyzing characters, and determining themes.  Monday, we will welcome Brenda Brainard to class to tell Native Oregonian myths and legends told by her family while growing up.

This week we will read non-fiction texts about Oregon’s geography to determine main idea & details.  Students will be learning to take brief notes while reading non-fiction text.  This will lead into a report writing project coming soon.

Math: Students have been learning to read numbers one through one million and determine value of digits in place values through the millions. This week we will continue conversations around rounding and comparing large numbers.  This work will lead into a review of adding & subtracting with regrouping with an emphasis on understanding place value.  Find out more in Learnzillion Unit 4.  Looking for ways to support and challenge your child?
