The Tale of the Children of Hurin by J. R. R. Tolkein
A story set in Middle Earth long before Bilbo and Frodo. A flawed hero, a dark lord, orcs, elves, dwarves, a dragon, fierce battles, and a family curse, make his an exciting read. The descriptions of the landscape and inhabitants of Middle Earth make this one of my favorite places to visit.
