The Infected

It’s the year 2041, Me and my brother had graduated highschool and will go on to college to start our career. Well, that’s what I would have liked to say, but unfortunately that’s not the case. You see, Earth suffered a major disease outbreak. Nobody knows where it came from or how it started, but because of the outbreak, we humans have been scavenging everything we can ever since. I would continue to tell you what happened, but let me start from the beginning.

It was 2040, My brother and I just finished our junior year of highschool and we’re getting ready to be seniors. Me and my brother Josh are twins. During the summer, a lot of people were getting sick one after the other. Nobody knew how they got sick or what it was. Doctors couldn’t figure out what it was or what was going on. Something was affecting the people of Lakewood, and it was spreading fast.

On July 2nd 2040 at 8:30 am I heard a knock on the door. I tried ignoring it and going back to sleep, until I heard another bang on the door. It sounded like it was important, but the minute I got out of bed, put my slippers on and walked down the hall to the door, it all stopped. I stood there for a few minutes waiting for another bang, I looked out the peep hole and saw a crowd of people in the street. I opened the door to get a better look at what was going on. For a second, it felt normal having so many people crowded into the street, but then I realized it was only 8:35 in the morning. I figured the neighborhood was getting ready for the fair and figuring out who was at what booth. I went back into my room and got ready to leave.

“Josh! I’m leaving.” I didn’t get a response back so I knocked on his door and walked in.

“Did you hear what I said?” I asked.

“No, I’m kinda busy, if you can’t tell.”

I sighed and gave him an annoyed face. “Okay well I’m leaving. Mike, Avery, Ashley and I are going to the fair later. I’ll be home tonight.”

Josh gave me a smile and said, “Alright. Be safe and if I call answer. Love you.”

“Love you too!” I yelled as I ran out the door.

I was on my way to go pick up my friends when I stopped at the gas station and realized that nobody was there. I thought they were closed since everyone was gone. I got out of the car to look around and I saw someone limp their way behind the building.

“Hey! Do you work here?..” Silence. It was completely silent. “BANG!” “Hello?! Is anybody there?” I walked around the building to see if anybody was there but I didn’t see anything. I walked back and got into my car and drove off to go meet my friends.

As I was driving down the street I noticed that there was no one on the streets. All the cars on the street were either stopped or parked on the side. I thought it was because everyone was at the fair and just parked on the street because there wasn’t enough parking. I decided to park on the street since everyone else was and I assumed there was no parking. I parked my car, got out and started walking to the fair.

When I was walking down to the fairgrounds, I saw some kids and parents stopped outside a store staring like they’ve never been there before. I yelled to say hello and waved at them. Their bodies moved slowly to turn around and look at me. It looked like they haven’t showered in five days and didn’t know where they were.

“Hey, are you guys lost?” I asked. They stared at me and said nothing so I continued to keep walking. When I got to the fair I saw my friends standing at the entrance waiting for me. As I started to walk up I saw someone running towards us.

“Who is that?” I asked myself. I had a bad feeling and looked closely. I realized it was my twin brother. “Lucy! We need to get out of here right now! How come you didn’t answer my phone call? I told you to answer if I call you!” I looked at him with a confused look. “I never got any calls from you though?” I took my phone out of my pocket and checked.

“Nothing, I don’t have any missed calls or texts from you.” Josh looked at me and said “Okay, well we all need to leave right now. Have you seen the news? There’s a disease outbreak and people are dying and getting turned.” Mike, Avery, and Ashley all looked at each other and ran. Me and Josh stood there trying to figure out what to do and where to go. I turned to Josh and said, “We need to go find Mom and see if she’s okay.” Josh looked down at his feet and got quiet. “What? What’s wrong? Is Mom okay?” I looked around the parking lot, panicking thinking if she was okay. “Lucy, Moms gone. It’s just you and me now.”

Josh explained to me that when mom was at work, someone had came in and was infected. They got everyone in the office. When Josh told me that, that’s when I realized my life had now changed forever.
